Popoyo is one of the best surfing destinations in Nicaragua. It comprises of the inner reef and the outer reef. You cannot come to this destination without hitting the waves in Popoyo. The inner reef is great for surfers of all skill levels. However, pro surfers will find the outer reefs one of the best and most challenging surfing spots. It features massive waves and shallow reefs. To surf the outer reef, you might even need a jet ski to get you started. Hence, you know you are dealing with some severe waves.

Tamarindo Beach used to be a secret surf beach among locals and tourists, but no more. The beach is a beautiful spot that is great for all surfers, whether beginner or advanced. Remarkably, this site is often uncrowded. Hence, it offers an excellent time for a group of surfing friends. You do not have to battle for waves with other surfers since it’s just you and your friends and a bunch of other tourists.

Manzanillo is an excellent surfing spot that lies right in front of the famous Mukul Resort. It is a left point break that offers three barrel sections and a lengthy rippable face. Anyone hoping to master the waves of Manzanillo must be in great shape because its waves are incredible. When at high tide, the waves break near the rocks. As you enjoy your surfing, look out for the reef and sea urchins. You can chill at the nearby surf shop or play a game of golf at the excellent 18-hole golf course in the area after your fun surf experience.

Panga Drops is a few minutes away from Colorado, a private beach near San Juan del Sur. It is an excellent surfing site, and it’s no wonder that it is usually crowded. It might not have the most impressive waves, but the crowds are spread out. The area can be accessed by boat or through Hacienda Iguana. It is an excellent spot with the reef creating left and right waves. Furthermore, you can always surf here all year round.

Remanso Beach lies about 15 minutes away from San Juan del Sur, and if you are seeking a perfect spot to enjoy some waves and the beauty of nature, it is an excellent destination. The waves are mild and quiet. Therefore, it is a suitable site for beginner surfers who have never been on board. There are a couple of restaurants on the beach, and you can enjoy a local meal as you watch others surfing. Also, even if you are an advanced surfer, you can still enjoy this place. Just paddle farther out and catch the more massive waves that appear on some good days.

Santana is a beautiful beach that is surrounded by lush green hills and rocky outcrops. It’s situated in a town that lies between San Juan and Popoyo. Colorado Beach lies near San Juan del Sur. It is a private beach. However, since it is one of the best surfing spots in Nicaragua, it usually gets crowded. North of the beach lies Panga Drops, which is another surfing attraction. If you seek surfing barrels, then Colorado Beach is your destination in the country. It is located only a few minutes from Costa Esmeralda Airport, so you can drop in immediately once you arrive. The place is especially excellent for advanced surfers, although beginners can also have a go. The beach features a restaurant and bar as well.
8. Hermosa Beach
It used to be that Hermosa Beach was only reached by boat from San Juan del Sur. However, since 2012, it has become more accessible and welcomes tourists and surfers from around the world. With this new accessibility, it is now more crowded. However, don’t let that deter you from visiting. You will enjoy its impressive waves and facilities. If you don’t feel like surfing, you can always hang out at the bar and restaurant on the beach. If you are interested in surfing, however, you will need to rent a boat to encounter the best waves.

Yankee Beach lies south of San Juan del Sur and is a 25-minute drive from Hermosa Beach. The trip to the beach is smooth as the road is paved. Although there are no bars or restaurants on-site, the place makes up for this lack by providing some massive and highly enjoyable waves. It is also one of the quieter beaches in Nicaragua. The waves found here are advanced and range from high to overhead. No doubt, you will enjoy a splendid surfing experience at this site.
10. Maderas Beach
Maderas Beach is 10 minutes away from San Juan del Sur and is an excellent getaway for the adventurous traveler. It lies adjacent to Lake Mangua and offers perfect winds. It is one of the best spots for beginners as there are several schools around. The waves are sometimes calm and provide a tranquil experience. However, advanced surfers can likewise get their surfing fix here. On good days, there are bigger waves that will keep advanced surfers happy. The lefts and rights offered by the beach handle a long-period swell excellently.
