When the mines were closed for reclamation, the community members appealed for the mine to be turned into a historical site, seeing that it could serve as a prominent feature for mining heritage. Visitors get to see the hardware used for mining and learn about the birth of the mine. There is even a modest playground to keep the kids occupied while the adults explore the area.

Besh Ba Gowah might sound like a mouthful, but it is, in fact, a revered site in Arizona, as it holds the ruins on the ancient Salado people, dating back as much as 8 centuries. It is roughly translated to mean the “place of metal.” Part of the ruins have been restored, and there is a museum close by that provides a window into the lives of the people who lived there around 200 years ago. There is also a significant collection of artifacts and Salado pottery that’s waiting to be seen. Admission for adults costs 5 USD, seniors enter for a dollar less while kids below the age of 12 can enter for free.

4. Pickle Barrel Trading Post

Editor's Note: There's no photo available at the time of writing

Pickle Barrel Trading Post is the site of the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise. Not quite sure what that means? Well, its skies are a truly distinct shade of blue, and this effect is caused by the turquoise mine just below it. The mine itself has been shut down for some time now, but you can shop for that very element at the Pickle Barrel Trading Post, as well as other uniquely Old-West items. Check out some fantastic pieces of Native American Jewelry or vintage items that can only be bought here, and nowhere else!

Fall in love with the views from this canyon, and make sure you have a good camera in hand. The Salt River Canyon transitions gradually from a desert scene to that of an alpine beauty. Just be sure to adhere to the speed limit as there are definitely going to be some drivers going in slow to take in the beauty of the place. A picnic area and a hiking path that takes you to the river can be found within the canyon site.

A part of Globe that seems like it’s been frozen in time. Nothing much has changed since the time of the Old West. You get to see a lot of its architectural features and even take part in one of the many historical tours on Broad Street. When you’re done, dine or shop till your legs can’t handle it anymore!
