The grand city of Globe, Arizona tempts visitors over with some of the most breathtaking mountain vistas. It is the abode for Gila County. The place was at one time a mining camp and was the home to Arizona’s first female governor, Rose Perrica Mofford. As the place is etched in history, travelers will love to find out first-hand about the stories behind the Tonto National Monument and the Besh Ba Gowah Archaeological Park. The drive along its road is one that is scenic and truly memorable, with sandy roads that go on for miles and miles. Yes, it’s time to dive in head-first and understand everything there is to do in Globe.

Read on to check out the best things to do in Globe, Arizona:

1. Old Dominion Historic Mine Park

When the mines were closed for reclamation, the community members appealed for the mine to be turned into a historical site, seeing that it could serve as a prominent feature for mining heritage. Visitors get to see the hardware used for mining and learn about the birth of the mine. There is even a modest playground to keep the kids occupied while the adults explore the area.

Round Mountain Park has five hiking loops, which varies in difficulties. Some suit beginners while others are meant to really test your stamina and endurance. Drop by at the right time and you’ll get to see its wildflowers in bloom.

The mountain park is well-regarded for its undisturbed natural beauty, especially its view from the peak. The longest hike here is 5 kilometers (3 miles), but you can take shortcuts and explore the other trails too!

3. Besh Ba Gowah

Besh Ba Gowah might sound like a mouthful, but it is, in fact, a revered site in Arizona, as it holds the ruins on the ancient Salado people, dating back as much as 8 centuries. It is roughly translated to mean the “place of metal.” Part of the ruins have been restored, and there is a museum close by that provides a window into the lives of the people who lived there around 200 years ago. There is also a significant collection of artifacts and Salado pottery that’s waiting to be seen. Admission for adults costs 5 USD, seniors enter for a dollar less while kids below the age of 12 can enter for free.

4. Pickle Barrel Trading Post

Pickle Barrel Trading Post is the site of the Sleeping Beauty Turquoise. Not quite sure what that means? Well, its skies are a truly distinct shade of blue, and this effect is caused by the turquoise mine just below it. The mine itself has been shut down for some time now, but you can shop for that very element at the Pickle Barrel Trading Post, as well as other uniquely Old-West items. Check out some fantastic pieces of Native American Jewelry or vintage items that can only be bought here, and nowhere else!

Fall in love with the views from this canyon, and make sure you have a good camera in hand. The Salt River Canyon transitions gradually from a desert scene to that of an alpine beauty. Just be sure to adhere to the speed limit as there are definitely going to be some drivers going in slow to take in the beauty of the place. A picnic area and a hiking path that takes you to the river can be found within the canyon site.
