6. Visit Chapel Ruins
In medieval times, Brentwood was a crossroads in the Great Forest. The trees were burnt down to provide a stop-off spot for the pilgrims who were travelling from East Anglia to the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury. So, the first thing to be built here was a chapel to serve the pilgrims. The ruins of the chapel are still visible in Brentwood. In a small garden on the High Street, you can catch a glimpse of the irregular ragstone and flint walls. The detailed doorway mouldings show that the chapel was reworked near the end of the 14th century.
