Built in 1816, El Santuario De Chimayo is a well-known Roman Catholic church in Chimayo that receives over 300,000 visitors every year, making it one of the most important pilgrimage site in the United States. The place is famous for its founding story–a friar saw a light from the hillside and found a crucifix then brought it to the Santa Cruz church, but the crucifix kept coming back to its original spot.
