14. Take a tour of Sohail Castle

Perched on a hill at the mouth of the Fuengirola River, Sohail Castle is an ancient monument that overlooks the Sierra de Mijas Mountains. The castle has stood on this site since 1485 and has been a strategic lookout point for many ancient civilizations, including the Phoenicians, the Romans, and the Moors. Restoration work began in the late 20th century to reflect the fortresses’ long defensive history. Visitors today can stroll through the open-air auditorium, stand in the shadow of the square towers, and tour the small museum. The castle is also the site for many cultural events throughout the year, including the Festival of the City of Fuengirola, the Medieval Market, and the Beer Festival.

20. Visit the breathtaking Cathedral of Málaga

The historic Cathedral of Málaga is an impressive architectural marvel located in the city’s Old Town. This stunning building was once a mosque but was converted into a Catholic church over the course of three centuries. Construction finally finished in 1782 and today, the church remains as a gorgeous example of Spanish Renaissance and Baroque style. The building consists of three naves with a polygonal apse and a wondrous tower. The second, southern tower was never completed, which led to the church’s nickname of “la Manquita,” or “the one-armed lady” in English. The interior of the church is filled with beautiful works of fine art, including the delicate choir stalls from the 17th century that were designed by Luis Ortiz, and completed by renowned wood-carver Pedro de Mena. Visitors can explore the on-site museum, roam the lush gardens, and climb the 200 steps to the top of tower for a wonderful panoramic views.

22. Stop and smell the flowers in the Estepona Orchid House

While the three massive glass domes of the Estepona Orchid House are very impressive from the outside, the interior of these building will simply blow you away. Within the spheres, 5,000 plants burst in vibrant blooms along twisting paths and dappled glens, and a thundering waterfall sends cascades of rainbow-colored spray through the air. This astounding collection of plants contains around 1,300 species of orchids and is one of the largest collections in Europe. The self-guided path includes signs in both Spanish and English to describe the amazing variety of plants within the domes. There is also a delightful café and a small souvenir shop on-site.
