Eatonton, Georgia - what a unique name for a town! Many people probably haven’t heard of this place, but it does have a lot of history to its name. Eatonton was named after William Eaton, an official and diplomat during the time of the Tripolitanian War in the early 1800s. It went on to see the aftermath of the American Civil War, bringing with it buildings, stories, and influence from the revolutionary period. It’s also known as the Dairy Capital of Georgia because of its biggest industry. If those aren’t unique enough facts, Eatonton only has a population of 6,480 people! It’s such a small town, you’re probably left wondering, “Why then should I come here? What’s there to see?” Well, you should read on to find out more about the things to do in Eatonton, Georgia.

Perhaps one of Eatonton’s most famous residents was Joel Chandler Harris, the man behind the stories of the Uncle Remus Museum. Uncle Remus was a character Harris created based on the tales some slaves would share with him during his time working at Turnworld plantation. The Uncle Remus Museum was opened in 1963 and today, it houses tales and artifacts from the beloved character and renowned writer. The museum’s exterior is unique as well because it is made of log cabins to symbolize the cabins that slaves used to occupy during the American Civil War, which inspired many of the characters and tales created by Harris, including the iconic Brer Rabbit.
