Learn the art of making handmade cotton mattress at a historic shop

Chin Huat Mattress

At Cintra Street in Georgetown, Penang, you’ll find Chin Hock Mattress Store representing one of the few remaining old industries. Despite facing intense competition from various synthetic fiber pillows and mattresses in the market, Mr. Wong, the owner, still insists on using the most traditional natural cotton to make the products.

Handmade cotton mattress production is gradually declining, not only because people prefer newer and more innovative pillows and mattresses, but also because this industry is labor-intensive, unprofitable, and unhygienic. Despite the decline of this old industry, this historic shop is running and is worth a visit.
