Kabaka’s Palace is located in Mengo Hill, about one mile (1.6 km) from Buganda Parliament. The site was the former home of the King of Buganda, though it currently remains unoccupied following the ouster of Kabaka Mutesa II by Milton Obote and the atrocities committed by Dictator Idi Amin. The building’s interior is out of bounds, but visitors can tour the underground prisons which were converted into Amin’s torture chambers – if you were stronger or smarter than Amin, or he thought you had an ugly face, you would likely end up in these torture chambers. It is believed that more than 300 lives ended through torture in these underground chambers.
