Ko Larn (Coral Island; also spelled Koh Larn) is an island situated 7.5 km (4.6 mi) offshore from Pattaya. It is one of the most beautiful islands off of northern Thailand and is easily accessible. You can certainly enjoy the white sand beaches at Ko Larn; coral reefs are the hidden gems you can find at the other end of the island. Activities are not limited to sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, but also there is parasailing, waterskiing, jet skiing, and underwater sea walking if you are looking for adventurous activities. Don’t forget to get your hands on a fishing rod — you might have a fabulous catch in Koh Lan. If not, make sure you eat the fresh catch of the day before you go.

Some visitors prefer to take a full-day trip from Pattaya to this beautiful jungle island. Its turquoise bay shelters thriving coral reefs. You can spend some time swimming in the tropical ocean, which is a comfortable temperature. Alternatively, you can snorkel through the transparent water, exploring the ocean floor near the coral reefs. There is even more for you to explore. You can simply ride on to a glass-bottom boat to see the friendly underwater marine life.

There are five main beaches on the island, and some tend to be more popular and crowded than others. The least visited beaches are gems, and accommodations off the main beach on the island are simple but reasonably priced. Tawaen Beach and Samae Beach are among the busiest and most well-known on the island. There are several resorts and international restaurants catering to tourists who choose to stay on the island. You may choose to stay on the island to explore other quieter beaches without worrying about missing your boat. Tien Beach is the smallest beach on the island, and would virtually become deserted after 5:30 pm. This makes this an ideal place for watching the sunset. Nual Beach is also known as monkey beach, because a small family of macaques scavenge around at the beach area. It is 35-minute walk from town, and if you stay on the island, this is also a good place to watch the sunset.

Parasailing behind a speed boat is an activity not for the fainthearted, even if the entire trip lasts only about a minute. If you enjoy the thrill of flying up and along at a high speed, this activity is not to be missed. The cost is about 14.50 USD / 500 THB, but it is open only till noon, so be sure to check it out early and prepare to get wet.

5. Banana boat ride

A banana boat ride is for pure fun. A banana boat is a rubber boat in a banana shape about 3 meters (9.8 ft) long, which can hold up to ten people. A jet ski is the “engine” that sets the banana boat in motion, but do not expect you will be on the boat all the time! If you meet with one “skillful” jet ski driver, you might get thrown off several times during your ride. Do have fun climbing back up and go again! Remember, this is for fun, so don’t get mad!

7. Eating fresh

If you have no desire to try fishing, you will just be fine eating fresh fish at one of the restaurants at the pier or along the beaches. You should enjoy the Thai style, super fresh seafood dishes. You may order the fresh catch of the day from any of the restaurants. Fine dining menus also offer lobster or prawns, and other sides might cost up to 43.55 USD / 1,500 THB. If you don’t mind dining in a typical restaurant, you may consider ordering a take away pack at 1.45 USD / 50 THB at the small stores around the pier. These smaller restaurants target locals, and they are likely non-English speaking. Don’t worry, just point to order. You just have to decide what price you are willing to pay and go to the right kind of restaurant.

Capturing good memories at Koh Larn

Nabaan Pier is the first place to greet you when you arrive in Koh Larn. Most activities are organised around the beaches. If you are on a tour from Pattaya, do stick to your tour operator and they will bring you back to where you set off from. If you are exploring the island on your own, you may hire a scooter to go the beaches that offers the kind of activities you prefer. Alternatively, you can take the blue shuttle buses or ‘songtaews’ that move around the beaches to bring visitors to their preferred locations. Whatever activities you choose, be it swimming, seabed walking, and more, the white sand beaches, the blue water, and the marine life are the common features you will remember from Koh Larn. Bringing along your waterproof camera is a plus, but optional.
