Located north of Cyprus, Kyrenia may be a relatively small town, but it sure is packed with things to see, places to discover, food to delight, and activities to partake in. Kyrenia lies along a beautiful coastline. What this means is that you get stunning stretches of beaches and a thriving harbor, with restaurants, bars, hotels, and more exciting features to discover. There are also a lot of historical sites, particularly the Old Harbour and Kyrenia Castle. Kyrenia’s got the best of both worlds – the old and the new. So to help with your travel itinerary, here’s a list of the best things to do in Kyrenia.
1. Step back in time at Kyrenia Castle
One of the most popular tourist attractions and historic landmarks in the country, Kyrenia Castle dates back to the Byzantine period, when it was originally built in the Ottoman era. Surrounded by a moat, this castle consists of two museums, a dungeon, chapel, and a cistern. Here, you can find the Gallery of Tomb Finds, which houses archaeological sites and the Kyrenia Shipwreck Museum, which houses the remains of the oldest shipwreck discovered in the waters of Cyprus. Aside from being a historic site, spending time at the castle also offers splendid views across the Kyrenia harbor. Kyrenia castle is a must-see for anyone visiting Kyrenia for the first time.

The historic and beautiful harbor of Girne is among the sites that most travelers want to see during their visit to Kyrenia. Along the harbor sits the 18th-century Public Arts Museum and here you can find all sorts of seafaring vessels – a testament to its booming export economy. The views of the harbor itself is a sight to behold – a skyline of boats, luxury yachts, centuries-old edifices, and mountains as a backdrop make a pretty nice picture. Kyrenia Harbor is a popular tourist destination, lined with cafes, bars, and restaurants, as well as accommodations, making it a popular meeting place for both locals and foreigners alike.

3. Discover the wonders of Shipwreck Museum
Located in the famous Kyrenia Castle, the Shipwreck Museum houses the oldest ship unraveled in local waters – a 4th-century Greek Merchant ship. The ship includes all of its cargo as it sailed across the Mediterranean during the era of Alexander the Great and his successors. The ship sank in open waters near the Kyrenia harbor. It was discovered by marine archaeologists in 1965 and salvaged between 1967 and 1969. Somehow the ship was saved from total destruction and after six years of reconstruction, the museum was finally opened to the public in 1976. With so much history and artifacts, Shipwreck Museum is also a must-visit for those who are visiting Kyrenia for the first time.
