In the historical town of Diósgyőr lies Diósgyőr Castle, a castle built in the 12th century, but it was tragically destroyed during the Mongol invasion. It was then excavated in 1962, and it reveals a great history.

2. Visit Szinva waterfall

In the small picturesque town of Lillafüred, you will find Szinva waterfall (also called Lillafüredi vízesés), which stretches for 30 km (19 mi) and runs along Miskolc. In the middle of the beautiful forest of Bukk, the waterfall stands as the highest waterfall in the country at 20 m (66 ft) high.

Despite its location in an industrial place, the stream remains clean enough to host a variety of fishes because of preservation efforts. It also provides the city with water, and though it generally dries up in summer, it is artificially replaced. This beautiful site is not just a natural wonder but an effort to beautify the surrounding areas of a neo-Renaissance hotel built in the 1920s.

3. Explore Szent István Cave

Hungary has many caves across the country, and Miskolc has some of the most interesting ones, including Szent István Cave. This place is a lime stone cave that is 710 m (2,329 ft) long, and it is said to have been formed during the Triassic period.

The cave was accidentally discovered by rescuers when a dog fell into a hole, with a 15-m (49-ft) drop. This hole was the only entrance to the cave until an entrance was made in 1931 for tourists.

The cave is filled with stalagmites and stalactites, with the deepest part of the cave called Hell, and some beautiful dripstone structures are named Mammut’s Mouth, Fairyland, Column Hall, and Concert Hall because of their interesting formations.

You can also visit Anna Cave, which is also referred to as Petőfi Cave, is right beside the hanging garden at Palota Hotel. This natural limestone cave was discovered in 1833 when a shaft was opened to provide water to the nearby Hámor.

The cave doesn’t only boast its limestones but also its variety of plant fossils. The plants found in the cave are notably covered with lime bark, moss braids, and many more; this beautiful vegetation is seen in several places of the cave. Bats also inhabit the cave, as well as a number wildlife like the arthropod species.
