Muradie Mosque is the city’s main mosque and an Albanian National Monument, dating back to the 16th century. It is one of the longest surviving structures in the country, pulling through difficult times, including the post-war communist era when many places of worship were destroyed. The structure was constructed by a culturally revered architect — Mimar Sinan, who was also part of the construction of the Taj Mahal in India. The National Museum of Independence is the first museum in Albania and a significant part of its history, built in 1936. Appreciate the town’s heartwarming scenery from this beautifully carved, natural terrace, set 98.4 feet (30 meters) above the sea level. It is the highest peak in the city and home to a prominent temple, constructed in the 17th century by the Bektashis, who were then an influential group in Albania. It was named after the sect’s spiritual leader — Sejjid Ali Sultan, popularly called Quzum Baba (Father Kuzum). Legend also has it that his unmarked resting place is round the area.

8. See historical relics at Muzeu Historik

AlthoughMuzeu Historik, constructed in 1918, was meant to be a hostel for Italian soldiers, it never served that purpose. It was initially the War Museum and is currently a historical-archaeological institution. It is housed in two separate levels and sections — the Pavioni i Arkeologjisë on the first floor and Pavioni i Historisë on the second. This initiative was conceived after Albania’s democracy. On the first level, you will find tools, dating back to the Neolithic period, including tombstones inscriptions, written in different languages, iron weapons, bronze, and knives. The second level features facts and displays from independence, such as photographs, posters, and military relics from WWII. Don’t miss this historical tour.
