Supposedly coming from the Scottish words “wee” meaning small and “burn” referring to a small creek, Weyburn is an interesting little small town in Saskatchewan. The town is home to just over 10,000 people and is located only 110 km (68 miles) from the provincial capital of Regina and also only 70 km (43 miles) from the North Dakota border. The town of Weyburn grew when the railroad came to the area from neighboring Manitoba and by the turn of the 20th century, Weyburn was a full-fledged town, with a bank and post office. The story of the railroad in Canada is an important one, marking the country’s expansion west through the prairies. The railways first started in the nearby town of Portal, North Dakota, and then made its way north through Weyburn and also through mid-eastern cities in the United States like Chicago and Detroit. The Soo Line Historical Museum houses plenty of interesting exhibits and artefacts that tell about the town’s rich past. It includes timetables, directories, and newspapers from the early 20th century.

2. Hang out at the Weyburn Water Tower
Locals of Weyburn know the water tower as a sort of unofficial symbol of the city. But what makes the water tower more than just a water tower is that it is only one of four designed in this fashion. Resembling more of a lighthouse than a water tower, the Weyburn Water Tower is visible from almost every direction. The tower was built in 1910 and served as the city’s water tower until 1977, when it became a recognized historic landmark.

The prominent building currently housing the Signal Hill Arts Centre was built in 1912 and is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The five-story heritage building is maintained by the city and is often a place where local events take place. There is always something interesting going on here, from cooking classes to pottery classes and activities for kids. 6. Indulge in outdoor activities at Nickle Lake Regional Park
Located on the shores of Nickel Lake and the Souris River, the Nickle Lake Regional Park is a perfect place to spend an afternoon by the water, amidst the nature. 8. Take a pleasant stroll through the Riverside Park Walking Path

The Riverside Park Walking Path is part of the larger Tatagwa Trail system. The system is a series of paths and trails that meander through the entire city of Weyburn, giving people a perspective of the native plants and trees commonly found in the area. There are also benches and picnic tables, as well as bike paths in the park. The Riverside Park Walking Path goes along the Souris River and gives walkers and joggers a great view of the river that flows through the town.

10. Catch a show at the Tommy Douglas Performing Arts Centre

Named after the honourable Tommy Douglas, “The Greatest Canadian”, the Tommy Douglas Performing Arts Centre was first built in 1906 as a baptist church. Today, it stands as a heritage building and a center for performing arts. The room has over 130 seats, a grand piano, and a small museum dedicated to Douglas, who was himself a minister here in the 1930s.
