The “Ruins of Yancheng” are relics of an old walled city in Wujin district and 221 BC was the earliest record of a commandery settlement founded during the Qin Dynasty. In 589, the city was named Changzhou or “ordinary prefecture”. The Grand Canal construction in year 609 made Changzhou into a trading and shipping port for grain and other local produce like fruit, bamboo, fish, tea, and silk. Cotton mills proliferated in the 1920s as the Japanese invaders drove workers and industries to relocate to this city. From its 1960s Cultural Revolution up to today, Changzhou is the important industrial center for high technology, engineering, food processing, and textiles.
