When you think of America’s Gulf Coast, New Orleans generally comes to mind. However, a pleasant alternative to wilin’ out in the teeming streets of NOLA should be explored in nearby Picayune, Mississippi. Picayune was founded in 1904, named for a Spanish coin at the time, by the owner and publisher of the New Orleans Daily Picayune. That paper later evolved into the nationally prestigious Times-Picayune, which is the modern day media powerhouse that often reports the frequent heroics of Drew Brees and lesser dealings across the Mississipi Delta region. The town is only 40 miles (64.3 km) from New Orleans and has close access to casinos and riverboat expeditions and even a space centre. The transcendentalists out there also have several opportunities to be one with nature and revisit the world of Tom Sawyer in Picayune’s wildlife refuge, the Fontainebleau State Park, or the Crosby Arboretum. To complete your trip, check out these top Airbnb vacation rentals in Picayune, Mississippi.

We handpicked these listings carefully, considering (wherever possible) Superhost status, recent guest reviews, location, accommodation type, prices, availability of dates, decor, and amenities. 1. "Chickie's Roost" family-friendly barn apartment (from USD 75)

A picturesque (quite literally), converted farm barn can be your home away from home for wonderfully inexpensive rates. Resembling Minnie’s Haberdashery from Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” without the presence of undesirable types; the iconic second-floor guesthouse sits atop an animal stable and has a cozy, old-fashioned interior like that of a frontier house. Views of the farm property and pecan orchard can be gazed upon from the window of the upstairs loft, and the area features two beds(queen/full), a kitchenette, a bathroom, and a separate living room downstairs with a sofabed and another bathroom.
