Schiermonnikoog is a small island in the Netherlands. It is the smallest inhabited island in the Wadden Islands chain. You will find only one village on the island, also named Schiermonnikoog, and the rest of the island is designated a National Park. Every year about 300,000 people visit the island to enjoy its beautiful scenery. The landscape is made up of dunes, mudflats, woods, and native plants and flowers. Twice a year they host huge festivals that bring in tourists from all over. Bird watchers will love visiting the island as there is a duck sanctuary. The habitat attracts birds of all species. Lake Westerplas is the only pool of fresh water on the island, and you can see plenty of birds, including some rare species, swimming in the water. Since the island is so small, the other popular past time is bicycling. You will find a number of places that rent them during your visit.
