Schiermonnikoog is a small island in the Netherlands. It is the smallest inhabited island in the Wadden Islands chain. You will find only one village on the island, also named Schiermonnikoog, and the rest of the island is designated a National Park. Every year about 300,000 people visit the island to enjoy its beautiful scenery. The landscape is made up of dunes, mudflats, woods, and native plants and flowers. Twice a year they host huge festivals that bring in tourists from all over. Bird watchers will love visiting the island as there is a duck sanctuary. The habitat attracts birds of all species. Lake Westerplas is the only pool of fresh water on the island, and you can see plenty of birds, including some rare species, swimming in the water. When you are looking for a place to unplug from the modern world, Schiermonnikoog is it. This small island does not allow cars, so everything you need can be reached by bicycle or on foot. The small village has a number of shops, a supermarket, and restaurants and bars for you to enjoy. But the main reason to visit is the serene natural beauty all around you.
