You’re wandering around Kunming, looking at all the fancy and not-so-fancy looking restaurants, wondering where you should eat. Truth be told, there’s no way you can die of starvation in Kunming - there are at least five restaurants at every corner. The problem is rather how to choose among all of them. Trial and error? But you’re only around for a few days, no time for that. You want something that’s certainly good, something special, something on your taste, maybe something local. No problem, it’s all covered. You can find the best restaurants in the city here.

2. JianXinYuan (jiànxīn yuán)

The most popular food in Kunming is called “cross bridge rice noodles” (过桥米线 - guò qiáo mǐ xiàn ). It’s not so much because of how tasty the food is, but rather because of the love story that comes with it. The legend says that a woman had to cross a long bridge in order to take food for her husband. Since the soup would get cold on the way, she thought of separating the hot water from the rest of the ingredients and only mixing them up once she arrived there. Try to have a local tell you the full story - there’s also a reason why the husband was isolated. In any case, if you want to try the local specialty, JianXinYuan restaurant is the best place for that. Since it’s a chain, there are more of them around the city.
