2. Kamakura

In the morning: Pay your respects at the Tsuroka Hachimangu Shrine
Built in dedication to the God of War, Hachiman, the Tsuroka Hachimangu Shrine is one of Kamakura’s most visited shrine. Be sure to take part in the many festivities here - the most exciting event happens during mid-April and mid-September, where the act of horseback archery (yabusame) is performed in the main area of the shrine.

In the afternoon: Sasuke Inari Shrine and Hidden Village
After visiting the bustling shrines, head over to the Sasuke Inari Shrine for a touch of peace. Legend has it that Yoritomo, the first shogun of Kamakura, was visited by an old man in his dream. Upon receiving guidance from an ancient Inari God (fox spirit) about the upcoming war he was about to fight, he built the shrine dedicated to the spirit after winning the fateful battle. Perhaps you, too, will be struck with a wave of inspiration from the ancient spirits dwelling in the stone statues and moss-covered offerings.

In the afternoon: shopping at Komachi-dori

In the evening: Head over to Enoshima
If you’ve been enjoying the abundance of nature today, take a day trip down to Enoshima on the Enoden about 45 minutes away. Blessed with beautiful sights of high sea cliffs and hawks that circle the skies, it feels almost detached from the metropolitan Japan that we know of. For the lovebirds madly in love, pay a visit to the love bell facing the sea. Make a wish for a better future as you ring the bell together, and write your messages to each other on padlocks, securing your love for each other with a key.

Access: Take the private Odakyu line from Shinjuku to Fujisawa (54 minutes with the kaisoku-kyūkō (快速急行) or 66 minutes via kyūkō (急行), then change to the Enoden train.
3. Toyama

In the morning: Five-Hundred Buddhist Arhats at Chokei-Ji Zen Temple
Pay a visit to the 500 Buddhist arhats that line the walkway of Chokei-Ji Temple. Each of them has a different posture and facial expression, representing those who have achieved enlightenment. Sculpted over a span of 50 years, these statues have seen Toyama change across centuries, and is a sight you definitely don’t want to miss.

Famous for the traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, the name originated from the shape of the houses. Built like hands held in prayer, the steep roofs resemble the posture one takes up while praying, particularly Buddhist monks. Designed to hold up large amounts of snow during winter, the roofs are sturdy enough for the 4 seasons. Take a spin around the paddy fields and try to fit in - the slow pace of life here may unsettle you at first, but soon enough, you will learn to relax like them!

5. Kanazawa

In the morning: explore the Higashi Chaya district
The largest out of the other three teahouse districts, the Higashi Chaya district used to be part of the entertainment districts where geishas would perform for guests. Although now they are more uncommon, you can still take a look at the costumes and instruments used by the geishas at the various tea houses open to the public here.

Access: Take the right loop of the Kanazawa loop bus in about 10 minutes from Kanazawa Station. Get off at Hashibacho bus stop (number RL5), and take a 5-minute walk to the district.
Take a spin in the ninja temple
Although not directly associated with ninjas, the Myoryuji Temple earned its nickname of a ninja temple with the many trapdoors that hide underground tunnels and secret rooms meant to ambush attackers. Tours are available in Japanese, with English translations available on guidebooks.
