California: land of blue skies, white sands, and adorable beach towns. While many tourists flock to Malibu and Santa Cruz, there are countless beautiful beaches covering California’s famous coast. Some of the best ocean-side destinations in California are the lesser-known spots that have all the charm of a beach town without the crowds that overwhelm the more popular locations. One of my favorite quaint beach towns in Southern California is Seal Beach. Here are a few ways to spend an unforgettable day at Seal Beach.
Play in the water or just relax on the warm sand
When you first arrive in Seal Beach, head straight to the water. This family-friendly beach is clean and the water is clear. On days when the sun is bright (which is most days in Southern California) take a dip in the refreshing ocean or get a Californian tan while lounging on this picturesque beach.
The waves are pretty mild on this beach, so it is not ideal for surfing or any extreme water sports. On the flip side, the light waves make this a great beach for family fun and more mild water games such as boogie boarding.
Find beach-themed treasures at the seaside shops
Walking up Main Street, don’t be surprised if you are tempted to walk in every shop. Most of the shops here are owned by local residents and overflowing with adorable beach-themed treasures. Whether it is a sand dollar printed pillow or a flowing beach cover-up, everything in these shops screams California.
Those visiting from other cities in California will love finding pieces to compliment the beach bum décor many Californians adore. If you are visiting from farther away, these shops will offer you way to remember your time in the Golden State with something less touristy than a keychain with your name on it.
Shop for old world wonders in this hidden antique shop
One of the most exciting shops in Seal Beach is also the hardest to find. Tucked behind the Old Town Gardens is a tiny shop known as the Antique Gallery. This shop is stacked floor to ceiling with antiques and vintage findings. As anyone who regularly shops for antiques already knows, an antique shop can look like a room full of junk at first glance. But look a little closer and you will likely find special treasures from many years ago. This antique shop is a fun place to escape the sun and spend some time searching for that hidden diamond in the rough.

Satisfy your cravings with some of the best tacos in town
There are plenty of delicious restaurants in Seal Beach and many locals will recommend Walt’s Warf for fresh seafood and quality service. Walt’s Warf is great for those interested in sitting down to a nice meal, but one of the great things about being in a beach town is waltzing around in your swimsuit cover up and sandy flip-flops. This isn’t quite the dress code at Walt’s, but it is entirely acceptable at Taco Surf.
Southern California is one of the few places where you can find authentic Mexican food that is practically as good as it is in Mexico. Taco Surf is one of those places. They serve an entire menu of delicious Mexican dishes, but their tacos really are unbeatable. Whether you sit in their brightly colored, festive little restaurant or take your tacos to go, you are guaranteed to be satisfied after a meal at Taco Surf.
Be more relaxed and have more fun at Seal Beach
If you have all the time in the world, I would suggest visiting all the different beaches and decide for yourself which town is your favorite. However, if you have limited time in Southern California and want to find a relaxing, quiet town where you can enjoy a full beach day, head to Seal Beach. You will enjoy all the same benefits of visiting a cute beach town without the crowds and garbage that litters many of the more famous beaches in California. Seal Beach is small enough to do in a day, but fun enough to make that day one you will always remember.
