Christmas in Shillong is truly a dream, and arguably, one of the best times to visit! Since the majority of the population is Christian, the streets are filled with people, lights, and laughter this time of the year.

The main goal of the festival is to meet friends and family and eat a lot of cake and good food. So, if you're planning to visit Shillong, you could make it a Christmas trip and immerse yourself in happiness and cheer!

"The traditional dress for Khasi women (of Meghalaya, India) is called the ""Dhara"" or ""Nara"". It consists of two pieces of cloth hand-woven with Mulberry silk yarn and pinned at each shoulder.

Each dhara has an intricate design embroidered on its border, as seen here in silver. The rest of the dhara is plain and comes in any colour you can possibly think of.

You can buy them from small cottage industries in rural areas. These days, with a rise in demand, the local market, Police Bazaar in Shillong will also have boutiques stores that sell them. Additionally, you could also purchase a dhara from online stores on Instagram and WhatsApp.

Nohkalikai Falls is one of the most famous and breathtaking waterfalls in Meghalaya, India. Standing tall at a height of 340 meters, this waterfall is located in Sohra (also called Cherrapunji), one of the wettest places in the world.

The local legend of this waterfall is a dark one, too dark to describe here but essentially it is named after a lady called "Likai" who jumped off the top of the waterfall after a terrible incident. "Noh"  means "jump", and "ka" means "her" in Khasi, the local language of the place, so the name loosely translates to "Likai jumped".

Nohkalikai is beautiful all year round but try not to visit during the monsoon season as the heavy rain could be dangerous to get stuck in.

Another beautiful waterfall in Sohra, Meghalaya, India is called Lyngksiar Falls. This fall has multiple tiers and is named after a flower that grows in the area.

You have to hike a bit to get to this view but it's definitely worth it. The hike itself is a light descent filled with rock formations and natural pools of water.

The best time to visit is after the monsoon so that you're not caught in the downpour, but you also get to see the waterfall at its peak volume!
