Rishikesh or Hrishikesh is a city in Dehradun, in the state of Uttarakhand in India. Rishikesh is located at the foothills of the Himalayas and is known as the ‘Gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas’ and ‘Yoga Capital of the World’. Along with Haridwar, Rishikesh will be addressed as “twin national heritage cities”. Owing to the religious significance of the place, non-vegetarian food and alcohol are strictly prohibited in Rishikesh. If you are an adrenalin-junkie and you love adventure sports, then the city can be an excellent destination for you. Irrespective of whether you are well or unwell, old or young, this tiny riverside town in the northern part of the country takes care of everyone equally. You will be simply amazed to know the kind of adventure activities that the town offers its tourists and locals.

Read on to learn about all the fantastic things to do in Rishikesh, India.

Travel advisory:

  • Rishikesh is stunning throughout the year, but you can decide the best time to visit depending on the activities you wish to try there. For example, the best time for river rafting in Rishikesh is between September and mid-November. It's better to avoid traveling in July as there's a festival in the area, leading to road closures and over-booked hotels.

Event to look out for in Rishikesh:

  • International Yoga Festival: Rishikesh attracts people from all over the world with its yoga opportunities and even holds an annual yoga festival. This takes place every February and offers an opportunity to practice asanas while breathing in the fresh mountain air by the River Ganges.

Quick tip if you're visiting Rishikesh - rent a scooter! I always pick one up from Tapovan or near the bus stand. For about 500 INR a day, you can zip through narrow lanes where cars just can't go. Just take a video of the scooter before you take off to avoid any rental hassles. It's the best way to explore the town, hands down!

Spots of cultural significance

Rishikesh is a major pilgrimage destination and a historic city, so it’s natural that the area is home to several places of religious and cultural significance. Check them out below!

1. Beatles Ashram

Who doesnt know the Beatles? History says they visited Rishikesh in 1968 for meditation. After this visit, Rishikesh came into the limelight throughout the world. The Beatles came here to learn transcendental meditation at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s Ashram. The main purpose of their visit to this ashram was to get advanced training about Transcendental Meditation. The ashram is home to a few unique spots, including the Beatles Cathedral Gallery.

Situated within the former lecture hall of the ashram, the Beatles Cathedral is a gallery of artwork inspired by the Fab Four. Initially started by street artist Pan Trinity Das, the gallery grew into the Beatles Ashram Mural Project in early 2016, when a number of artists produced murals for the walls. Another popular spot are the meditation caves. Ancient in appearance, but actually dating back to the 1960s, the striking dome-topped ‘meditation caves’ were built using stones taken from India’s holy river of the Ganges and constructed to accommodate Sanyasis and Bramacharis while practising their Sadhana.

The Beatles Ashram site is mostly in ruins, so those with mobility issues should bear this in mind before considering a trip to the site. Visitors should also note that, while the site is today in ruins, there is a small admission fee for entry, equivalent to INR 150 (2 USD) for locals and INR 600 (9 USD) for overseas tourists.

If you're plotting a weekend escape to Rishikesh, carve out time for the Beatles Ashram, known to locals as Chaurasi Kutiya. Trust me, it's a gem tucked away in the city's spiritual tapestry. Walking through those 84 meditation huts, I was hit by the sheer history—this is where the Beatles' creativity flourished, and you can almost hear the echoes of their iconic songs. The walls are canvases of vibrant graffiti; it's an art lover's and a music buff's paradise rolled into one. And don't sweat the expense; the entry fee is surprisingly budget-friendly. Aim to get there by 10am to soak in the vibe before it closes around 4 to 5pm.

The Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat, also referred to as the Maha Aarti, is an evening prayer performed on the banks of the River Ganga. It is a major highlight of the ghat, which attracts a large number of devotees and visitors.

The aarti is accompanied by holy music/bhajan singing, beating of drums and bells. People light oil lamps, set them afloat on flower-filled leaf boats and release them in the holy waters of the river. The lamps and the aarti make for a beautiful setting in the evening. The aarti takes place everyday from 6 - 7 pm. Take your cameras when attending the Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat. This is truly a moment to be captured for eternity. It is surely an awe-inspiring sight to see those hundreds of lamps floating over the Ganges.

The place becomes heavily crowded during aarti time. To get a good spot for watching the aarti from the front, we went there an hour before. I'll advise you to reach the ghat by 5 pm - 5:30 pm and assess the crowd, just to avoid being caught in the rush.

"Had an amazing picnic by the mighty Ganga in Rishikesh with my family and some friends. The best part was this particular private beach on the banks of the river Ganga, which we got access to from the resort we were staying at. We loved this beach as it wasn't crowded at all! The kids had a blast playing in the wet sand and splashing around in the water. There were vendors selling piping hot Maggie noodles and tea too. We spent the whole day by the banks, having a blast. For lunch, we didn't have to go far - just a walk back to the hotel! Perfect spot for a fantastic day picnic!

Tip: Best times to visit would be Sep - Oct and Feb-April. If you are adventures you can go river rafting too."
