About Big Ben
Big Ben is actually the nickname for the massive bell inside the tower, officially named the Elizabeth Tower after Queen Elizabeth II in 2012. According to VisitLondon, Big Ben is around 95 meters tall and has 334 steps up to the belfry and 399 steps to the Ayrton Light, which is at the top of the tower. Wondering how did this bell tower get its name? While the origin is unknown, it’s believed that it was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who was the first commissioner of works and fondly known as “Big Ben” in the house. Another story suggests that it was named after Benjamin Caunt who was a heavyweight boxing champion at that time.
Tips for visiting:
- For the best photo opportunity, head to Westminster Bridge across the River Thames.
- The area around Big Ben can get crowded, so plan your visit for early mornings or evenings if possible.
- Combine your visit with exploring nearby attractions like the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, and Westminster Abbey.

Brilliant views of Big Ben
Big Ben and the Westminster Palace are a wonder to behold. Just think about how much history has been seen and made by those places! Getting to see the tower at both day and night, from the comfort of your hotel room, is something not many people get to experience. Usually, experiencing the tower involves battling through throngs of tourists, craning your neck to see the tower, and snapping a quick selfie. Be sure to book hotel rooms early – this is prime property, and they’re sure to sell out fast.
