No matter how old you are, Universal Studios Japan (USJ) is an absolute must-visit tourist attraction when you’re on vacation in Osaka, Japan. With its beloved characters, exciting rides, and immersive attractions, this world-renowned studio and theme park has everything you’ll ever dream of! Nevertheless, keep in mind that due to its popularity, thousands of people visit this place every day and it’s hard to think you’ll be able to experience all the attractions. So, based on my experience, I’m sharing this comprehensive guide to Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, for essential tips and insights to help you make the most of your visit.

Buying tickets

Universal Studios Japan

Before you can enjoy USJ, you must first get your tickets. You have two options: buying them at the entrance or online through the official website or a third-party website. However, purchasing them online is a better choice as the ticket booth can get crowded. This way, you can avoid waiting in long lines and enter the park faster.

There are different types of tickets here, including 1-Day Studio Passes, 2-Day Studio Pass, 1.5-Day Studio Pass, and Express Passes, which range from 6,800 JPY (49.46 USD) to 10,800 JPY (78.56 USD) for all ages. The Express Pass, while more expensive, allows you to skip the lines for selected rides. If you are visiting during a busy period, the Express Pass could be a worthwhile investment.

Planning your day

Once you’ve got your ticket, it’s time for fun! But remember that USJ is big and there’s a lot to see. So, it’s important to make a plan so that you don’t miss your favorite attraction. The following are some very popular attractions:

1. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has consistently drawn huge crowds and gained a reputation as one of USJ’s top experiences. When you visit, it feels like you’re walking into the magical village of Hogsmeade with its snow-topped buildings and the Hogwarts Express train.

The key attractions include the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride inside Hogwarts Castle and the Flight of the Hippogriff roller coaster. Besides that, you can even use magic wands in certain spots, which is exciting for any Harry Potter fan!

2. Super Nintendo World

Opened in 2021, Super Nintendo World is the newest part of the USJ and has instantly become everyone’s favorite ever since. There, you can walk through a green pipe gateway and find yourself in the mushroom kingdom from the Super Mario games.

This Super Nintendo World features a thrilling Mario Kart ride and a nice ride called Yoshi’s Adventure. There’s also a unique feature called Power-Up Band, which you can use to interact with the park, collect coins, and even battle bosses just like in the games. So much fun!

3. Jurassic Park

Ready to step into the world of dinosaurs? Drawing inspiration from the Jurassic Park movie series, this area offers several attractions, including thrilling rides, interactive exhibits, and dinosaur shows. Its signature ride, Jurassic Park - The Ride, is a water-based adventure taking visitors through a dinosaur habitat, culminating in an epic drop at the end.

4. Minion Park

You wouldn’t want to skip the chance to see the biggest Minion-themed park in the world, right? This area is a haven for the playful Minions from the popular Despicable Me franchise and boasts numerous attractions, including Despicable Me Minion Mayhem and Freeze Ray Sliders. If you love those cute yellow fellows, you simply can’t miss this area!

In addition to planning your must-see attractions, don’t forget to get the USJ’s App on your device. It serves as a handy guide to navigating around, provides updates on show timings, and even allows you to book timed-entry tickets for specific areas such as The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World.

Getting there

Getting there

Accessing USJ is remarkably easy. If you’re staying in central Osaka, the best way to reach this place is by train. Take the JR Yumesaki Line, also known as JR Sakurajima Line, from Osaka Station to Universal City Station. The journey typically takes around 15 minutes and, from there, USJ is just a 5-minute walk away.

Apart from that, it’s essential to keep in mind that the theme park can become exceedingly busy. As such, it’s advisable to get there as early as possible. The sooner you arrive, the less time you’ll have to spend in queues!

Dining and shopping

Your visit to USJ won’t be complete unless you try the culinary delights and shop for unique merchandise. For your belly, the theme park offers a variety of dining options, from quick bites to sit-down meals. Be sure to try out the themed restaurant, such as Three Broomsticks in the Harry Potter area, Amity Landing Restaurant, or Happiness Cafe in Minion Park.

As for shopping, each themed area has its stores filled with theme-related merchandise. Whether you’re looking for a magic wand or a Super Mario plush toy, you can find it all there!
