One might wonder how the signature moonscape feature of Queenstown came about. Formerly a mining town of Western Tasmania, on the West Coast Range valley of Mount Owen’s western slopes, Queensland was first explored and exploited for gold (and eventually copper) in 1862 by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company. The town prospered in the 80s with an influx of hotels, schools, churches, and dams. The water from the mines poisoned the land but carved a beautiful facade on the tree barren hills with the colors of red, purple, orange and yellow from its mineral deposits flowing to the Queen River. The mines closed in 2014 and the town re-branded itself into a tourist destination. It’s easy with its colorful picturesque mountains and lovely heritage buildings. Book the best Airbnb vacation rentals in Queenstown for an awesome experience of Australia’s West Coast.
