This property is close to Elias Lönnrot's beautiful sculpture. Crafted by sculptor Emil Wikström (1864–1942), this masterpiece also earned him victory in the design competition arranged by the Finnish Literature Society in 1899.
It is said that Lönnröt himself coined the Finnish word for literature, “kirjallisuus”, upon the founding of the Finnish Literature Society (Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura) in 1831. The sculpture was cast in bronze in Brussels and was unveiled on 18 October 1902. This was done in secrecy and under cover of night, 18 years after Lönnrot's passing. This clandestine ceremony was necessary due to Finland's status as part of the Russian empire, where any display of national sentiment was rigorously monitored.
The memorial depicts Lönnrot during one of his folklore-collecting expeditions, meticulously transcribing the mythical words and poems he had just sung. To his right stands Impi, symbolizing the lyrical poems and songs of the Kalevala and Kanteletar, while to his left stands the god-hero Väinämöinen, the central figure of the Kalevala's epic and mystical verses.
