1. Sacher-Torte at the Sacher Cafe
The Sacher Cafe is part of the luxury Sacher Hotel and known for its Sacher-Torte. In 1832, young Franz Sacher was instructed to create a cake for Prince von Metternich’s guests. The cake was made with chocolate, apricot jam, and whipped cream. This cake, the original Sacher-Torte has been the most famous cake in the world since 1832 and one of Austria’s best-known symbols.
Sacher went on to open Hotel Sacher in 1876, where the Sacher-Torte becomes the hallmark of the house. Hotel Sacher claims to have the only original Sacher-Torte recipe, which is kept a closely guarded secret. Cafe Sacher is a great way to experience the best of Austria’s coffee house culture. 2. Afro Cafe
The ambiance of this place makes it absolutely worth a stop off. Though not a typical “Austrian” choice, it offers a great selection. They specialize in traditional African dishes and coffees. Bright colors and unique art fill the entire building. All art and design there was created by local African artists. Sit back and soak it in.

3. Stiftsbäckerei St. Peter
This beautiful old bakery is tucked away in the mountainside. The first evidence of Salzburg’s oldest bakery dates back to the 12th century, built by the monastery, along with a flour mill. Since that day, Stiftsbäckerei St. Peter has been present.
When you stop by the bakery today, you can watch the production process. An original wood fire oven is still used in the baking of bread. One of the most popular choices for regular customers is the sourdough bread.

4. Mozartkugel at Cafe Konditorei Fürst
Cafe Konditorei Fürst is the home of the original Mozartkugel. Paul Fürst created this sweet confection of marzipan with pistachio, nougat, and dark chocolate in the year 1890. To achieve the perfect round ball, they were dipped in chocolate and then completed by hand.
Even more then 125 years after the invention of these chocolates, they are still completed by hand as the traditional recipe instructs. Augustinerbräu is a former monastery turned beer hall. The beer garden is fantastic and an absolute must if the weather is nice. There are several indoor seating areas as well. Food stalls sell sausages, pretzels, and other tasty snacks, but you are permitted to bring your own food in as well. Pretzels are sold all around the city of Salzburg. But one of the best is Der 1. Original Brezlstand, which is on the way up to the fortress. 10. Mirabellplatz Market
Since 1906, Mirabellplatz has hosted a market every Thursday. This market is called the Schrannenmarkt. It takes place in front of St. Andräkirche. It is one of Austria’s largest markets, offering local specialties and regional produce, with vendors from Salzburg, Upper Austria and areas of Bavaria just over the border. There is a 10-year waiting list for farmers applying for a stall, which reflects the importance of the market.
