1. Küssnacht

Contributed by Tour Guide, Iuliia Solodenko

On the eve of Klausjagen, which takes place annually in the town of Küssnacht on the eve of St. Nicholas, participants of the future procession are already walking around Lucerne! About 1,500 men participate in the show, which approximately 30 thousand spectators come to watch every year.

Once upon a time, the pagan ancestors of the Christian Swiss chased wild spirits and did it with great disorder and noise, which was not approved by the authorities and even less by the church. But no prohibitions could stop them. As a result, in the 19th century, the procession was “Christianized” and episcopal miters appeared in the procession for the first time. In the 20s of the 20th century, the procession was transformed into a clearly organized parade of six stages.

First are men cracking long two-handed sheep whips (about a month before, every young man capable of holding a whip in his hands spends all his free time perfecting his skill, and the characteristic sound literally hangs over the surroundings). Next are the men in “iffelen” or “infuln,” luminous headdresses, some mix of episcopal mitres and stained glass, up to 2 meters (6.56 feet) high. Behind them is St. Nicholas with four servants in black robes and hoods, known as “Shmutslis,” who hand out cakes. They are followed by a brass band playing a traditional Klaus song, and then a large group rings the “Tricheln,” a giant version of cow bells.

At the end of the procession, men blow on cow horns. The celebration ends in local taverns.

2. Zermatt

Switzerland is famous for its mountain ranges and skiing options, and Zermatt is arguably the best place to enjoy these thrilling activities. It is close to one of the highest mountains in the country—the Matterhorn—and thus offers a beautiful experience to those seeking the thrill of skiing. You can enjoy riding in the cable cars that take you high above the town and provide a stunning view of the surrounding areas. If you enjoy walking, you will love this location. No gasoline-driven cars are allowed, and the only vehicles you would see are battery-operated. The air is crisp, clean, and fresh. While here, make sure to explore this alpine village’s old part. You can also learn more about the history of climbing the Matterhorn.

3. Zürich

Zurich is the largest city and one of the most appealing spots for visitors and tourists in the country. If you have an interest in culture, you will love this destination. It contains over 50 museums and 100 art galleries. Aside from history and culture, the town is home to several shops and establishments, where you can purchase Swiss brand-name goods. After a day of shopping, you can chill by taking a boat ride. Alternatively, you can choose to spend the whole day hiking in the mountains that make this region a beautiful location. See amazing landmarks, including the gorgeous Old Town and the Swiss National Museum, built in the style of a Renaissance chateau.

4. Interlaken

Interlaken is a rustic town that lies in the middle of rolling green meadows and massive monoliths. The location used to be a watchmaking center, but in recent times, it has become one of the most visited places in the country. Like in the rest of Switzerland, the air here is fresh and clean. As it lies between three famous mountains—Eiger, Jungfrau, and Monch—it offers stunning views that are not seen anywhere else on the globe. Relish impressive sights of the lakes, and also stop at the viewing platform where you will witness jaw-dropping views of the alpine mountains.

Lucerne is located in the German-speaking section of the country and boasts beautiful views of mountains and more. It is a picturesque little town that has bubbling city life, along with a lovely lake and majestic mountains. Some of the remarkable things you will find here include Chapel Bridge that dates back to the 14th century. Additionally, Lucerne is the home of Water Tower, which is reportedly the most photographed monument in the region. Tip from tour guide

Here are a couple of fun facts about Lucerne:
- It was the first city to join the Swiss Confederation. Every August 1, Switzerland celebrates the historical union concluded in 1291 by the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden.
- The best classical music performers from all over the world come to Lucerne in the summer! Such an important festival takes place in the most beautiful city in Switzerland with 80 thousand people. 25 years ago, a hall for almost 2,000 people with the best acoustics in the world was built for it.

Chapel Bridge Lion Monument Lucerne Lucerne Old Town Spreuerbrücke Lucerne Lake Lucerne

Lucerne is a picturesque and charming city sitting on Lake Lucerne against the backdrop of snowcapped mountains - a must-visit if you are in Switzerland.

Here are a few of my favourite attractions and things to do in the city:

- Chapel Bridge: This is a wooden footbridge over the lake, built in 1333. It was destroyed in a fire in 1993 and has since been restored, but you can still see remnants of singed wood and burnt beams.

- Lucerne Lion: I love him, but he makes me so sad. Carved in the rock in the side of the mountain, the dying lion represents the deaths of Swiss mercenaries who were killed while protecting Louis XVI. It's a beautiful and touching tribute.

- Old Town: Stroll through the old town to enjoy the medieval architecture and squares, cobblestone paths, painted facades on the buildings, as well as numerous restaurants and cafes.

- Musegg Wall: You can climb the medieval wall and many of the towers to experience amazing views of the city, lake and snowy mountains.

- Take a day trip to the top of Mount Titlus or Mount Rigi to experience the Swiss Alps.

- Go for a cruise on the lake.
