Casselberry first saw settlers after the Homestead Act of 1862 but it wasn’t till 1926, when Hibbard Casselberry, who was visiting family in a nearby area, started it on the path to its current name. It was first called Fern Park and had several different subdivisions and estates. In 1940, the town was incorporated with its new name of Casselberry. When World War I started, the town became the center of manufacturing for many wartime needs, such as parachutes and hospital tent liners. The town didn’t get a post office until 1959, due to a rule that a town can not be named after a living person. Read on to learn about the best things to do in Casselberry, Florida.

15. Mead Botanical Garden
This garden, dedicated in 1940, began as 50 acres (20.2 hectares) of a group of land named after Theodore L. Mead, a world-renowned horticulturist, who grew orchids and developed new varieties of caladiums, rare ferns, bromeliads, and other plants. After his death in 1936, his friends sought a location, not only to house Mead’s orchids, but also to develop a botanical garden in his name and memory.
In 1953, it was given to the city of Winter Park, with the continuing deed restriction that it be maintained as a botanical garden. In 2003, the Friends of Mead Garden formed a new partnership with the city, to focus on restoring and enhancing the garden, building upon the past, and responding to a renewed civic awareness of environmental issues.
