Escape the stresses of city living by spending some time amidst the tranquility and beauty of nature at Tanglewood Nature Center. As one can easily surmise from the name alone, you’d know that the place is all about preserving and being one with nature. It features more than 10 miles (16 kilometers) of hiking trails through wooded areas and meadows where you can enjoy beautiful views and sometimes even get to interact with different animals.
Aside from the hiking trails, the nature center also has an exhibit hall that features a wide array of taxidermized and live animals, all representing the local fauna. If you’re up for a picnic, you can also do so at the designated picnic area.

Interested in knowing more about the fascinating local history? Visit Horseheads Historical Society as it’s where you can find lots of information about the town’s storied past. There are two areas of interest in this historical spot—the Zimmerman House and The Depot Museum.
The first one is the home of the world-famous cartoonist, Eugene “Zim” Zimmerman, and exhibits some of his personal stuff as well as a huge collection of his works. The latter is a reconstruction of the original train depot that burned down in 1864 and houses many artifacts and stories of the town.

3. Visit National Soaring Museum
The National Soaring Museum is also called NSM. This is an aviation museum which preserves the history of motorless flight. It is only one of two such museums in the United States. There is a Heritage Hangar and an archive area with a gift shop on site, and numerous gliders in the exhibition from the 60s and 70s. Here you will also be able to take a glider ride on Harris Hill. You can book your visit in advance if you are planning to go there with a group.

4. Spend time at Teal Park
The Teal Park is an amazing public green park in Horseheads, New York. A political cartoonist Eugene Zimmerman donated the land for the park. In the summer there is a farmer’s market and the place is also a well-known venue for live concerts. The Teal Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A concert series is held every year and features local bands who play country-western, jazz, dixie land and much more.

5. Experience Harris Hill Overlook

Harris Hill is a beautiful venue surrounded by trees and trails for hiking. During the winter there is also a possibility for outdoor rinks to do some ice skating. There is also a pool with 2 different diving boards, along with a baby pool, and during summer there are swimming lessons provided. The Harris Hill also has a 3-hole golf course whereas the outing center has a large picnic pavilion with a fully equipped kitchen and seating arrangements. The picnic pavilions offer grills for cooking and there are non-electric pavilions too.
The youth camp consists of a dining area with tables and chairs, restrooms and a fully equipped kitchen room. A large deck and barbecue are also located outside the youth camp room.
6. Visit Catlin State Forest

Catlin State Forest is a perfect place for camping, hunting, trapping and getting a view of wildlife. This is a huge area which doesn’t have designated recreation trails but there are certain deer paths and old lanes which are perfect for exploring. You will have to do a lot of walking to access various places in the forest. There is a diversity of wildlife habitats too. It is just five miles (8 km) from the north of Horseheads, in Allegheny Plateau. There are certain recreational opportunities. 7. Enjoy Harris Hill Amusement Park

9. Wings of Eagles Discovery Center
The Wings of Eagles Discovery Centre has four main sections of exhibitions. The first is Science on a Sphere which is a giant animated globe with computers and stunning projectors displaying visual animations from real planetary data. The globe is designed as such that you will feel as if it is suspended in space. The second section contains full-size and scaled replicas of airplanes which are displayed in the aerospace collection.
The third section in the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center has a huge collection of aircraft on display. Some of the aircrafts on display were used in military settings for training or combat purposes. Famous aircrafts such as Aeronca L3 (Grasshopper), Bell UH-1H (Huey), and Douglas B-26B (Invader) can be found on display. The fourth section comprises of a museum which exhibits cultural, social and technological significant events in the history of airplanes.
