If you are an air and space fan, this is the museum for you as it is the Smithsonian's largest air and space facility. This museum, which is also free, boasts the full-length space shuttle Discovery, an SR-71 Blackbird, the Enola Gay, and many other large aircraft! While there is paid parking on site, the museum is also accessible via the silver line on Metro. The museum also makes a great place to visit if you are on a long layover at Dulles International Airport as a regular bus service runs between the two locations. Just make sure you leave enough time to go back through security at the airport.

3. Ox Hill Battlefield Park

The Kearny Monument

Posted by Civil War Trust on Saturday, 1 September 2012

Witness to the full extent of authentic Chantilly history, when you visit Ox Hill Battlefield Park in Virginia. The only major civil war battle to take place within what currently exists as Fairfax County, the site today has become Ox Hill Battlefield Park, a testament to those who lost their lives in the historic confrontation. More than 1,500 soldiers were either killed or wounded during the original battle, in a skirmish understood as both the Battle of Ox Hill and the Battle of Chantilly.

Though the actual warfare was spread across nearly five hundred acres (202 hectares) of surrounding wildlife and woods, the contemporary memorial that is Ox Hill Battlefield Park continues to exist in remembrance of warriors past. Anniversary tours, war reenactments, and other historical events routinely take place at Ox Hill Battlefield Park, the grounds of verifiable Chantilly history!
