Lithuania may be one of the lesser popular countries in Europe, but it’s not like there’s nothing to do there, especially if you’re talking about its second biggest and probably the most happening city, Kaunas. Mentioned first in the 14th century, Kaunas has seen quite a bit of history ever since. While most head to its more famous neighbour, Vilnius, we recommend that you visit here as well. Although the city remains quite cold throughout the year, May to August make for the relatively lesser colder months and perhaps the best time to visit. Here’s an exhaustive list of things to do in Kaunas, Lithuania. Just keep this with you and consider your sojourn sorted.

1. Stop by the Monument to the Victims of Fascism

Yes, just as the name suggests, here’s a majestic memorial made to commemorate the thousands of Jews who lost their lives to the Holocaust in the city. The three stelae were funded and commissioned by the remaining Jewish community of Kaunas. A competition was conducted to choose architects to spearhead the construction. They took 13 years to complete the construction and the monument was unveiled in 1991. The jagged, grey-coloured structures rise sharply above the ground. The central stela has stern faces carved in it and is topped with carved fists, indicative of Soviet propaganda. Poetically, the three structures sit right behind the Ninth Fort, which was where the Jews lost their lives.

3. Visit the creepy Devil's Museum

Showcasing a collection of devil sculptures, carvings, and paintings from across the world, the Devil’s Museum in Kaunas is as fascinating as a museum can get. It started off as a space to showcase Lithuanian artist Antanas Žmuidzinavičius’s collection, but eventually grew bigger until 1982 when it was converted into a full-fledged three-storey museum. Today, there are more than 3,000 artefacts there. Quite an interesting experience, this one.

Lithuania’s oldest as well as the largest place of worship, the Kaunas Cathedral Basilica dates back to the 15th century. It is dedicated to apostles St. Peter and Paul. The Roman Catholic Basilica we see standing today is a 17th-century construction and is a stunning example of transitional Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. The church’s high Baroque main altar, severe exterior, and a beautiful interior with about 2,000 stuccos is quite a sight to behold. One of the highlights that attracts maximum pilgrims here is the 16th-century painting of Our Lady of Sorrows and the 17th-century image of the Most Gracious Virgin Mother.

11. Pay a visit to the Christ's Resurrection Basilica

Posted by Arsen Arsenenko on Monday, 27 May 2019

Arguably among the most beautiful examples of sacral architecture is the Christ’s Resurrection Basilica in Kaunas, which was once a Soviet power station and then a factory before being consecrated as a church in 2004. Exquisite in its architecture and interior, this Art Deco basilica is touted to be the largest basilical church across the Baltic States and is considered an important symbol of the city’s troubled political past and eventual resurrection. The basilica’s two towers not only lift the grandiosity of the structure but also offer some fantastic panoramic views of the cityscape.

Also known as the Church of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary, the Vytautas the Great Church is among the oldest yet most exceptional buildings in the city. The church has been named after the Lithuanian leader, Vytautas the Great, who ordered and funded its construction as a commendation to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is nestled along the banks of the Neman River and makes for an important example of Gothic architecture. The Roman Catholic church was constructed around the 1400s and has since suffered a series of flooding and damages. However, the church underwent has several renovations, most recently in the 20th century, during which time the bell tower was added to its complex. Much of the church’s grandiosity has been lost over time, but regardless, you will be overawed by its Brick Gothic exterior and a Lithuanian-Latin cross-style of interior.

Exploring the town on foot is usual, but how about giving it a slightly interesting twist and hitching a ride on Kaunas’s funicular railway? Operational since the 1930s, funicular railways in Kaunas make for one of the oldest in all of Lithuania, and perhaps even the world! While these made for a popular mode of travel in the 20th century, it is seldom used for purposes apart from sightseeing now. Some of the famous sites that fall along its way are Vytautas the Great War Museum and the Basilica of the Resurrection. You’ll even be treated to some beautiful views of the cityscape from its brightly coloured carriages. If for nothing else, hop on to one of these for a trip back in time, when transportation was not all about cutting-edge technology and breakneck speed. Quite a novel experience, this one.

Street art finds a bold expression in the form of murals across the streets of Kaunas. Right from the poetic to the bold, colourful to monochrome, small to large, they’re of all kinds – and everywhere! While cafes, restaurants, shops, and city landmarks are usual places, it is these large graffiti murals that really liven up a tour of the town on foot. There’s some 50 or more spots in the city where you’ll find the most iconic of Kaunas’s street art murals. The one pictured here is called The Master, or Wise Old Man, painted in 2013 across the walls of an abandoned footwear factory – one of the most famous artworks in the town. This building is pretty near the Kaunas Castle so ask around for the building and stop by to admire the unabashed strokes of colour that make up this painting. This mural is so famous that you’ll even find merchandise being sold across the town!
