With trails, a bird observatory, and a natural history museum, and programming, this is a wonderful spot for those who seek the quieter side of life. Furry friends are not allowed but the center does offer some wheelchair-accessible spaces. Pack a picnic and unwind at Forest Park Nature Center. The Nature Center is even accessible by public transit, using City Link route #2. Permanent exhibits include a beautiful sculpture garden and the Duryea Motor Trap, the world’s first mass-produced, gasoline-powered manufactured car. 17. Tour the historic Pettengill-Morron House Museum

The beautiful and historic Pettengill-Moron House Museum invites you to take a step back into time and explore what life was like in Peoria in the 1800s. As some of the first settlers in the Peoria area, the house was built in 1868 for the Pettengill family in the Second Empire architectural style, then sold to the Morron family. In the early 1900s, the porch was added to the structure, giving it a Victorian flair. When the owner died in 1966, the house was handed over to the Peoria Historical Society and now it serves as a resource to the community and public.

The Northmoor Observatory is a poetic piece of Peoria’s community, offering viewings of the stars and planets. With collaborations with the Peoria Public Library, there are monthly events such as International Moon Night. Geek out over catching a glimpse of neighboring planets through the 9-inch refractor telescope on-site. Though the telescope was constructed in 1913, the observatory underwent a major renovation in 2009, when a new rotating dome was installed. The first observatory in Illinois to offer public viewings, head to Northmoor cloudless Saturdays from May to October.
