Wappingers Falls is a picturesque little town of just over 5,000 residents located about 2 hours north of New York City. Don’t let the size of the town fool you though, there’s plenty of things to do and see while visiting Wappingers Falls. If history is your thing, you can learn more about the city at both the Historic District as well as the Mesier Park and Homestead. The Historic District of Wappingers Falls has no specific address but is a stretch of land that is approximately 90 acres (36 hectares) in size and includes areas along West Main Street and South Avenue. Wappingers Falls became rapidly industrialized in the 19th century, which is the time period during which most of the buildings in the Historic District were built. Some of the buildings you’ll want to check out during your stay include the Mesier-Brewer House and the Village Hall, which is in the same building as the old post office.

People have been visiting the Kagyu Thubten Choling Monastery for guidance since 1978; today, the monastery is best known for its three-year retreat program, though much shorter term visits are available. Overnight accommodations are available to guests, as are meals-only and day visits. All visits require a reservation, which can be made at the monastery’s website.

Wappingers Falls has a rich history dating back to 1741, when Europeans first settled the area. The homestead is located in the first house that was built in the town by Nicholas and Adolphus Brewer. After a number of ownership changes since its completion, the land permanently became Mesier Park and Homestead. Tours are available on the second Sunday of every month, or by scheduled appointment; contact information is available on the homestead’s website.
