

The name Jining was first given to the region in the year 1271 during the Song dynasty and it has several distinctive associations in Chinese history and culture. It underwent many changes of name and administrative status. The present name, Jining, first appeared under Yuan’s (Mongol) rule in 1271. Jining is a prefecture-level city in southwestern Shandong province. It is located right to the north of the Lake Nanyang, and is today the northernmost city reachable by navigation on the Grand Canal of China. Jining has several distinctive associations in Chinese history and culture, as it was the birthplace and home of Confucius, along with many of his more famous disciples, including Mencius. 1. Jining People's Park

Here there is a large lake/pond with paddle boats, a little pond for fishing (not serious fishing), a playground for kids, an adult work out area, a merry go round, gates, pavilions, walking paths, plenty of benches and an ice cream vendor. You can also witness senior women practicing Sword Dance at Jining People’s Park. A place of recreation and relaxation located in the heart of the city, it is also near to all the hotels so it’s not hard for a tourist just to walk to and from the Jining People’s Park. The best time to visit this park is during summer as lots of activities are held that are very enjoyable to do and experience.

2. Beihu Tourist Area

Beihu Tourist Area is a 6 kilometer (4 mi) journey south of Jining City. It’s a beautiful tourist destination of wetlands with many gardens, trails, boat tours and rides along the big lake. The community maintains the place and they have built several gardens for visitors to enjoy.

3. Jining Dongda Temple

At the sacred Jining Dongda Temple you can see the old building, with detailed work along the roof edges and elsewhere. It also showcase small traditional shops and street vendors along the area. If you are lucky enough, you might get to see some religious activities done at this temple during your visit.

4. Jining Railway Guerrilla Monuments

Weishan Island is home to the Jining Railway Guerrilla Monuments, which is an educational tourism site, and worth checking out. The monuments are dedicated to the anti-Japanese railway guerrillas which significantly contributed to the history and culture of China.

5. Jining City Museum

Jining City Museum was built on the site that was originally Kakuji Takashi. It is a museum that showcases arts and crafts, science and technology and also history and culture. Artifacts can be seen here along with lots of descriptions, but you need to have a tour guide that speaks English because most of the descriptions are written in Chinese characters. Admission is free so you don’t need to worry about your budget and it is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

6. Chongjue Temple Tower

This temple showcases architectural buildings, sacred and religious sites and landmarks. It also features a canal exhibition hall. The museum had a free entrance so you can visit this architectural building at any time.

7. Tieta Temple

This tower is at the historic Jining Museum. It is towering to the east of the courtyard of the main building, and the courtyard itself also forms a component of the museum, with some of the historic buildings, the canal exhibition hall, a bronze statue, and a stone monument. This place gives more details on the history of Jining.

8. Cemetery of Confucius

Since Jining is the place where Confucius was born, one of the highlights of a visit is the Cemetery of Confucius. In 1994 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.
The Cemetery of Confucius is a cemetery of the Kong clan in Confucius’ hometown Qufu in Shandong province. Confucius himself and some of his disciples are buried there, as well as many thousands of his descendants. Everything about Confucius and his descendants is all written on each wall of the cemetery to honor them and provide information to all. The place is known as the “Temple and Cemetery of Confucius and the Kong Family Mansion in Qufu”.

Jining - a city that goes beyond a regular holiday

Jining, which is located right to the north of the Lake Nanyang, is today the northernmost city reachable by navigation on the Grand Canal of China. If you want to know more on China’s history, culture and all about Confucius, this is the best place to visit. Temples to a number of these philosophers still exist in various parts of the prefecture. It’s a place that is still full of the warmth of the past that’s been embedded until this era, a place where only people grow old, but the culture still remains.
