A short drive will bring those interested in military history to Patriots Point, a sizable maritime museum complex located in Charleston’s harbor. The centerpiece of Patriots Point is the U.S.S. Yorktown, an aircraft carrier that was commissioned and built in 1943 as a replacement for its predecessor that was sunk at the Battle of Midway during World War II. The ship also served as the vessel that retrieved the Apollo 8 space capsule and its crew after its mission. Patriots Point is also home to a large exhibit of aircraft used by the U.S. Navy, and two more former vessels – the destroyer U.S.S. Laffey and the submarine U.S.S. Clagamore. For anyone traveling with young adults or children, Patriots Point does also offer the chance to spend the night on the Yorktown.

Located at the Old Santee Canal Park is the Berkeley County Museum and Heritage Museum. This museum complex carries a voluminous amount of artifacts and relics that cover the history of Berkeley County going back as far as 12,000 years. That means that visitors will get the chance to see prehistoric exhibits as well as those exhibits dedicated to the Revolutionary War period when planters came to the region to settle and the Civil War era. In fact, the museum is home to one key artifact from that later time period – one of the first naval submersibles, The Little David which was used to attack Union ships in Charleston’s harbor. Another interesting aspect of the museum is documentation that captures the area’s involvement in an industrial project made possible by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal program in the late 1930s.
