There is something that usually grabs people’s attention when they visit Mérida; there are tons of squares and little parks where people like to hang out. Whether it is an unspoken tradition, or just something people do for fun, it is very common to see a lot people enjoying a nice time around these squares.

One of the most famous squares is the recently rebuilt Plaza Las Heroínas, where lots of people gather around every day to talk about their everyday life, have a cup of coffee or wait in line to buy the tickets for the cable car. Yes, I forgot to mention and the cable car station is next to Las Heroínas. Very convenient, isn’t it? Besides, it is just a nice place to hang around in during the evening and take some pictures.

8. Enjoy the view at La Culata


There is also this unspoken tradition of going to La Culata at night to enjoy the breathtaking view and the cold weather. Mérida is, indeed, an unforgettable city, full of cultural expressions, and jaw-dropping landscapes. La Culata is one of them. If you have a car and decide to go on a night ride to this beautiful place, you will not be disappointed. It is a 20-30 minute ride from the city center. You can even buy some blackberry wine on your way up and make your adventure even better. Once you get there you can sit on your car and watch the occasional shooting star while you have a glass of delicious wine.

Public House Bar is one of those clubs where you can feel the latino vibes all over the place. If you are in the mood for a latin party, look no further and head over to Public House. It is a rather small place but cozy and lively. A lot of salsa, reggaeton, electronic music and pop is played so you will have options to dance too. Beer and cocktails are affordable. It is open from Thursday to Saturday and it is located right in the city center, which is very convenient if you need a cab or a snack after you are done partying for the night. Go and let your hair down, latino style. It won’t hurt!

10. Experience local culture at El Ático del Cine

Despite the several cafés that Mérida has to offer, there are a few that usually make you want to come back. El Ático del Cine is one of those places. Simply put, it is just too cool. Imagine you want to stop by to order some pizza and you ask the staff if you can drink some wine you have in your backpack while you wait, and they say yes, and they even give you glasses. Yes, that’s how cool they are. Drop by this beautifully styled café and order a nice cup of coffee, and cocktail or a delicious pizza to enjoy with friends while university students are in and out of the place.
