Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, is a small suburban town, which is famous for its WW2 memorial war-ships, especially the USS Yorktown. 1. USS Yorktown, Patriots Point

If you are interested in WW2 warships, this is the place to be. Apart from the USS Yorktown, which was a highly decorated aircraft carrier, you will also find USS Clamagore which was a submarine.

Together, they form the Patriots Points making it a rich naval historical site great for a hands-on approach. USS Yorktown is the main highlight of the Patriots Point and also the most decorated warship in the area.

There are as many as 25 aircrafts (naval) which include the iconic A-7 Corsair and F-14 Tomcat. There is also a museum that will allow you to view medals of honor.

2. The Avian Conservation Center

The Avian Conservation Center is a bird sanctuary for birds of prey like the eagle, owl, hawk, and the falcon. The center actively rescues and provides shelter to these birds and is open for tourists who are passionate about these amazing creatures.

The staff is very caring and there are countless cases of injured birds who were found and taken to the center, and were nursed back to health. There are guided tours available but, kids under the age of 6 are not allowed.

3. Palmetto Islands County Park

The Palmetto Island Country Park is a must visit. The tropical setting of this family-oriented park means that you will find bicycle tracks, picnic sites, and boardwalks to spend quality time.

The picnic sites also come with built-in grills so you can enjoy a barbecue with your friends and family. Other attractions include an island, plenty of natural hiking trails, a playground with toys for kids, kayak zone, fishing zone and volleyball courts.

4. USS Laffey (DD-724)

USS Laffey is also known as the “ship that wouldn’t die”. Although it witnessed a number of casualties as well as destruction, the ship continued to fight and contribute to the war. There is a video that was shot using the on-board camera during the invasion that is worth every penny you will spend visiting this memorial. You cannot access the entire ship as some parts of it are still restricted to the general public.

5. Farmers Market

The Farmers Market is an amazing place for all food lovers. As the name suggests, you will find fresh veggies, fruits, seafood and a large variety of spices and country food.

There are so many dishes to try and buy here that it may take hours to go through everything. If you are hungry, you can find sandwiches, cookies, burritos, and more. The ambience is great, the food is delicious, and the farm products are fresh.

6. Memorial Waterfront Park

The Memorial Waterfront Park is a beauty to look at during the sunset. There is a small pier that is dedicated to those who love fishing. If you want to buy some souvenirs, you will notice that there is a small gift shop right near the entrance.

There is a reservation system, so it is recommended that you reserve your place before visiting. Usually, the spots are readily available.

Shem Creek Park is known for its amazing collection of seafood restaurants. The night life is vibrant and the food is delicious. The place is a heaven for seafood lovers. If you are looking for a view of the creek to snap some pictures, you can visit the boardwalk. While the boardwalks are long, there are also some trails that are short.

8. Boone Hall Plantation

Boone Hall Plantation has the honor of being one of the oldest working plantations in the USA. It has been in operation for the past 320 years. This plantation also has a history with slaves. A must visit for history diggers who can see the slave houses that will shed some light on their working conditions. There are coach rides available for those who want to cover the entire plantation.

9. Mount Pleasant Pier

There is a guy called Gerald Granier who his better known as Jerry on the pier site. Most tourists, and even the locals, pay him a visit for he is an excellent fishing guide. Local anglers visit the pier in great numbers for fun, food, and fishing. There are a lot of food stalls, and fishing accessory shops for you to choose from.

10. Charles Pinckney National Historic Site

Charles Pinckney is known for being the principal signer and author of the US constitution. This national historic site is a well-preserved plantation that will take you back in time to when the African Americans were still enslaved. There is a small library where you can see an old video of the man in action.

The park is lush with greenery and there are park rangers who are known to be friendly. There is a map that you can borrow to better understand the layout of the land. You will find pottery tools, and several locations show signs of archaeological diggings. Overall, an amazing experience.
