Kochi is located in the coastal state of Kerala in southwest India and has been a port city since 1341. The harbor was used by Chinese, European and Arab merchants and various sites throughout the city reflect the influences of those civilizations, including Fort Kochi, diverse houses of worship and beautifully tiled colonial bungalows. Mattancherry Palace is a beautiful visit, which was constructed by the Portuguese in 1555. St. Francis CSI Church was the first European church built in India. Those who love the sun and sand can head to Cherai Beach, popular for shell collection, swimming, and viewing dolphins. Take a break while exploring this interesting city. Mocha Art cafe is located a two-minute walk away from Mattancherry Palace, on Synagogue Street. The cafe offers views of the Jewish Synagogue, which is the oldest in India. When the synagogue was still in use, the rabbis used to live next door in a Dutch-built building, which was eventually turned into a warehouse after it was bought by Abdul Karim Mohammed, a spice trader, in 1915. In 2017, Mohammad’s grandson, Junaid Sulaiman, turned the warehouse into a cafe, on the suggestion of his friend. Most of the original features have been retained in a comfortable and attractive space for indoor and outdoor dining. The cafe is famous for its chocolate cake, with handmade chocolate sauce, but also for a number of dishes with rice that are the typical cuisine of Kerala.
