It spreads to about 144 acres (58.27 hectares) and is named after the famous Florida folk artist, Gamble Rogers. In October 1991, while camping on this site, Rogers tried to rescue a tourist during a heavy riptide after a child cried for help. Both Rogers and the tourist drowned and did not survive.
