Goa is an Indian state and a popular vacation destination, with endless beaches, great nightlife and dining. The state is also known for its Dudhsagar Falls. Literally translating to ‘Sea of Milk’, it is located on the Mandovi River, and is the highest falls in the country. The four-tiered waterfall is 37 mi (60 km) drive from Panaji and is also accessible on the Madgaon-Belagavi rail route. Dudhsagar Falls is India’s highest waterfalls and measures around 1,017 ft (310 m) in height and with a width of 98 ft (30 m) at their widest. Located in the state of Goa, the falls are on the Mandovi River. Located between Goa and Karnataka, the falls make the area rich in biodiversity. During the monsoon season, the force of the water in the falls is massive. Various activities are available here.

Trek to Dudhsagar Falls

An enjoyable trekking experience is available to the bottom of the Dudhsagar Falls, with two routes available. One trek is from Kulem, where the jeep trail is followed to the falls. The second trek is from the base of the waterfall via the railway track.

Take a tour of the spice plantations

Visitors can enjoy a tour of the local plantations where several beautiful farms grow like nutmeg, cashews, chilies, betel nuts and other deliciously scented crops.

Go on a jeep safari

A jeep safari to the Dudhsagar Falls is particularly popular in the area. It take visitors to the various national parks nearby. Goa is located at the Western Ghats, near the Mollem National Park and the Bhagwan Mahaveer National Park. A jeep safari accommodates seven guests at a time, crossing through the jungle where animals, snakes and birds can be seen. On arrival at the falls, it is possible to jump in the water to cool off and enjoy juice and other beverages by the falls.

It is not wheelchair friendly

Due to rocks and rough pathways to visit the Dudhsafar Falls, it is not suitable for a person in a wheelchair.

Best time to visit Dudhsagar Falls

The Dudhsagar Falls are at their best shortly after the monsoon season, when the water floods down the rocks. This is best during the months from September or October to May.

Swimming

Swimming is a popular option in the pool directly below Dudhsagar Falls, which is cool and pleasant, especially on a hot summer day. The pool is accessed by climbing over the rocks and it is possible to swim to the place where the falls come down into the pool. Plenty of rocks are available in the surroundings for relaxing and sunbathing after a refreshing dip.

Vendors

There are usually vendors selling cold drinks and food at the falls. However, visitors must be aware that plastics are banned in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and it is important that visitors pick up after themselves and take their garbage with them when they leave.

Traveling from Kulem

If traveling to the Dudhsagar Falls from Kulem, it is possible to trek or take a jeep safari through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.

This breathtaking waterfall is a perfect destination for getting closer to nature. You can even have a delicious picnic here after hiking the forest. However, there are many monkeys around who will steal your food at the first opportunity, so make sure to be careful. But if you like, you can even feed them some fruits or nuts, although they will eat virtually anything.

Dudhsagar Falls can be reached by car, bus and train as follows:

By car

Dudhsagar Falls is located 37 mi (60 km) from Panjim City and can be accessed by road.

  1. Take DB Marg, Rua de Ourém and Panaji - Farmagudi - Margao Hwy Bypass Rd/Panvel - Kochi - Kanyakumari Hwy/Ponda - Panaji Rd to NH748
  2. Follow NH748 to Darbandora–Sancordem–Mollem–Collem Rd in Dharbandora.
  3. Continue on Darbandora–Sancordem–Mollem–Collem Rd. Drive to Dudhsagar Waterfalls Trail in Sonaulim

Parking

Parking is available on the site.

By taxi

It is possible to visit Dudhsagar Falls by taxi, but this is more costly and varies depending on where you are traveling from.

By bus

A trip to Dudhsagar Falls from Panaji by bus takes about three to four hours, and the buses run twice daily.

By train

Dudhsagar Falls is located on the rail route between Madgaon and Belagavi. The falls are 29 mi (46 km) from Madgaon and can be accessed on the D-Gama - Yesvantpur Special (07310), Yesvantpur Express (17310) and Goa Express (12780) trains.

A Dudhsagar Falls tour package can be booked on the attraction’s official website where you can choose a complete, full-day tour package, including a jeep safari, a spice farm tour, an authentic Goan meal and a visit to historic old Goa churches. Alternatively, individual visits to the various attractions in the area can be booked.
