The City of Oslo, which is the capital of Norway, is located along the Oslo Fjord, a beautiful seaside area characterized by the presence of several little islands. The Oslo Fjord frames Norway and creates a postcard image depicting this beautiful northern country the way everyone imagines it.

The Oslo Fjord consists of a wide range of waterways going through peninsulas and islands and is divided into an inner and outer area. Its little islands are woven together into colorful twines making a unique, fascinating landscape where every spot has its own history and identity.

The closest islands to the Oslo City Center are Hovedøya, Lindøia and Gressholmen.

The City of Oslo offers an incredibly good service to the people who want to visit the Oslo Fjord. Indeed you can easily find different ferry routes starting right in the Oslo City Center. Although Oslo is well known to be an expensive city, the ferry routes are included with the public transportation ticket without any extra fees.

At the beginning of the Aker Brygge area (right after the Nobel Peace Center) you will find an information point where friendly and qualified staff will give you all of the information you need to start your journey.

Have a tour across Hovedøya, an island of history

Hovedøya is the closest island to the city center of Oslo and is the first stop on the ferry route, as it is only a five minute cruise from the coast.

The island has been declared a natural reserve for its variety of flora and its ancient geological age, indeed collecting plant species or taking rock samples is banned.

Hovedøya offers to you a wide variety of activities as such as visit historical spots, bathe along nice beaches, enjoy beautiful views, hike in nature, and have a barbeque in one of the indicated spots.

As you can see in the picture, Hovedøya could also represent a solitary space where you can sit on a seaside bench and enjoy the astonishing landscape.

Find a Cistercian Abbey located in the heart of the island

Nestled in the heart of Høvedoia Island you will find the ruins of a Cistercian Abbey that date back the XII century A.C. The Hovedøia Abbey is really easy to find. It’s just a 5 minute walk from the coast, following the road signs placed right after the ferry stop.

The abbey was built in 1147 by the monks from Kirkstead Abbey in England and it was dedicated to Saint Edmund and the Blessed Virgin Mary. It consisted of 18 Romanesque and Gothic buildings following the Cistercian architectural requirements with an earlier church dedicated to Saint Edmund.

During the XV century, Hovedøia Abbey was one of the richest religious institutions in Norway, politically and economically independent from the Oslo Church. In 1532 the abbot of the monastery was considered to have an ambiguous political position and was ordered to be deported at Akershus Fortress by King Kristian II. In 1532 the abbey was also ransacked and burned down.
