1. Celebrate precious moments at The Manila Hotel

Let’s start with The Manila Hotel because it stands as a true testament to the city’s rich cultural and historic heritage since its establishment in 1912. I had the privilege of visiting this hotel for my grandmother’s centennial birthday. Upon arriving at the establishment, I was greeted by a traditional Filipino exterior, but don’t let its simplicity fool you because once you step inside, you will see how luxurious and modern the hotel is. It has a grand lobby adorned with crystal chandeliers and classic furnishings that create an atmosphere of sophistication and charm, along with the welcoming warmth of the Filipino staff. The hotel is clean and very spacious. The rooms are adorned with traditional Filipino interiors featuring dark wood and paintings, but its amenities and utilities have been modernized.

Once I entered the Centennial Hall, I was greeted with an astonishing view that I could swear I had only seen in movies. It was decorated with beautiful chandeliers, flowers, luxurious lighting, furniture, and even a photo booth! The food was also excellent—a mix of Filipino dishes with a unique twist, although some weren’t to my taste. I also had a few favorites, such as the strawberry dessert. It was an emotional yet joyous event celebrating my beloved grandmother. At the end of the night, we all danced on the ballroom floor, partying until midnight!

The next day, my family and I decided to explore and take pictures around the hotel, where we found a beautiful view of Manila Bay, with its blue water and even cruise ships. I highly recommend this hotel for big events like the one we celebrated because it goes all out and would definitely create lasting memories. So if you’re thinking about celebrating something significant, like a wedding or debut, this hotel can be a good choice for you.

2. Learn more about Asia's oldest existing university at University of Santo Tomas

Next on the list is University of Santo Tomas—one of the most sought-after schools in the Philippines and a dream come true for me. University of Santo Tomas, or UST for short, was founded in 1611 and is one of the most prestigious institutions and the only royal and pontifical university in the Philippines. As the oldest existing university in Asia, it has nurtured countless leaders, national heroes, celebrities, professionals, and innovators all around the country. Its campus blends historic architecture with modern facilities.

There are multiple spots to check out on the grounds. First is the Arch of the Centuries. As its name suggests, it holds a significant place in history. Originally a part of the university’s Intramuros, it was relocated to its current location in 1954. The arch symbolizes the rich history and enduring legacy of UST as the oldest existing university in Asia. For Thomasians, passing through this arch during the freshman year marks the beginning of our academic journey, and passing through again upon graduation marks the end. There is a myth among us Thomasians that once you have entered the arch, you must not pass through it again because doing so may hinder your graduation.

The building features a grand facade adorned with statues representing the virtues and fields of study offered at UST. It also houses the iconic central clock tower, topped with a statue of St. Thomas Aquinas, our patron saint. The Main Building accommodates administrative offices, lecture halls for medicine students, and the university museum. When you enter, do not hesitate to ask fellow students or guards for directions. As a freshman, I have been lost in this building multiple times and almost missed exams because of it.

As I mentioned before, inside the main building, there is the university museum—our third must-visit spot. Fun fact—UST Museum is the oldest existing museum in our country! It showcases a diverse collection of artifacts, including natural history specimens, religious artifacts, and fine art pieces. As far as I know, the entrance fee is only 50 PHP (0.85 USD), but it’s always a good idea to confirm with the guard on duty. There are many intriguing pieces to explore, and the museum also offers UST merchandise such as jackets and lanyards. If you have always dreamt of visiting or studying at UST, this is a great opportunity for you.

Fourth is the beautiful Lover’s Lane of UST, adorned with indigenous trees. It is a popular spot among students due to its tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty. However, do not worry, as Lover’s Lane is open to everyone and is not exclusively for couples. It is a wonderful place to bond with friends and family, creating cherished memories and capturing photos. Whether you visit for a leisurely walk or a moment of solitude, Lover’s Lane holds a special place in the hearts of us Thomasians. Please remember to follow the signs around the area, such as staying off the grass and disposing of trash proper

The last spot to visit is the hotel. Yup, you’ve read that right, there is a hotel on my school campus. Fancy, isn’t it? Hotel 1611 can be found on the fifth floor of Buenaventura G. Paredes O.P. Alumni Center Building, or the BGPOP building, as we call it. According to The Varsitarian, the hotel is open to guests as long as they secure the required year-long advanced reservation because to the hotel’s high demand. Apart from the spots mentioned, there are many more places to explore and food spots to try here in UST.

3. Discover exquisite art at National Museum of Fine Arts

National Museum of Fine Arts is home to a significant portion of our rich artistic heritage, consisting of the finest works by Filipino artists. It is a visually stunning establishment that can be easily spotted from the roadside, with a large Philippine flag waving proudly in its midst. The museum showcases the works of renowned Filipino artists such as Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo, Guillermo Tolentino, and more—true titans of Filipino art. One of its most famous exhibits is Juan Luna’s “Spoliarium,” an incredibly powerful and symbolic painting in the Philippines.

Upon entering the museum, you may encounter a long line, but don’t worry, it moves quickly! You simply need to surrender your backpacks and tumblers to the guards. Once inside, you will be greeted by a multitude of artistic works to appreciate, observe, and capture in photographs. This museum is an absolute must-visit if you find yourself in Manila, especially if you have a love for art!

However, I want to remind you of one important thing—it is advisable to bring a pocket-sized fan as the interior can become quite humid due to the number of visitors, extensive walking, and stair climbing. Oh, and for those looking to take beautiful pictures, if you have a film or digital camera with you, be sure to bring it inside!

4. Immerse yourself in culture at Chinatown Museum

Lucky Chinatown is a large shopping complex in Binondo, Manila, which is the world’s oldest Chinatown. Lucky Chinatown offers a wide range of shopping options and restaurants that serve authentic Chinese cuisine and other Asian dishes. The building is also home to Chinatown Museum.

I visited the Chinatown Museum on a school trip, and it was beautiful! It houses memories of the Chinese-Filipino community in Philippine society, including its history, such as the migration of the Chinese to the Philippines, the evolution of Binondo as a cultural and commercial hub, and the legacy of Chinese traditions in Filipino life. They provide a tour guide inside, a small spot at the entrance to take photos with your friends and family, and large and spacious exhibits that provide a deeper understanding of the artworks.

5. Admire gorgeous stone work at Manila Cathedral

I believe that the Manila Cathedral is one of the most visited churches in our country, not only because of its beauty but also for religious purposes. It is a testament to the Philippines during the Spanish occupation; hence, it holds many historical memories.

The cathedral serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Manila and is located in the district of Intramuros. You can reach it by taking the LRT-2 (Light Rail Transit Line 2) and getting off at the “Recto” stop. The cathedral is beautiful both during the day and at night, so you can visit anytime; however, if you plan on attending Mass, it is recommended to go during the day.

The cathedral boasts stunning stone architecture, providing the perfect backdrop for devotees and tourists to take pictures. Inside, you will find beautiful stained-glass windows, an exquisite altar, and a spacious aisle that can accommodate a large number of people.

6. Uncover Philippine heritage at National Museum of Anthropology

Up next on the list is a visit to National Museum of Anthropology in Intramuros, and the good news is that all national museums have no entrance fee! Just make sure you don’t visit on Mondays, as that is the rest day for all museums.

This museum houses ancient artifacts and contemporary exhibits, where you can discover the stories behind the different Philippine cultures.

Be sure not to miss the impressive displays of traditional textiles, intricate carvings, and historical relics, such as the Manunggul Jar (a burial jar from centuries ago), that bring the Philippines’ past to the present. If you’re a history lover or a curious traveler seeking an educational and immersive experience, then this is a great destination for you to visit.

My advice? Avoid imitating the poses of the paintings or sculptures, as this is considered mockery and unethical. The guards on duty will call you out, and you wouldn’t want to risk being thrown out.

7. Unwind in luxury at Hilton Manila

If you’re looking for a luxurious place to stay in the city, you might want to consider Hilton Manila, which is close to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and Newport Mall. This five-star hotel offers premium amenities, including very comfortable and large beds, one of the largest outdoor pools I have ever seen, and a wide range of dining options that cater to every palate, such as Japanese, Filipino, Indian, Western, and more.

I stayed here for two days and one night for a school immersion trip. It has an extensive ballroom where we had discussions about the hospitality industry, a question and answer portion with professionals, and discussed the goals and mission of the hotel.

Did you know that Hilton Manila is a sustainable hotel? They limit their use of plastic, glass bottles, and metal straws. The Do-Not-Disturb room signs are also installed electrically. They also taught us during the seminars that some of their decorations are upcycled, like expired coffee beans, which are made into coasters using newspaper, flour, and water.

Hence, if you’re looking for sustainable yet luxurious accommodation during your visit to Manila, I recommend this hotel.

8. Aspire for sustainability at Change Maker 2040 Museum

My last recommended destination is Change Maker 2040 Museum. I believe it only opened last year. This museum is dedicated to creating and inspiring a sustainable future for our planet as it is the first Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) museum in the Philippines.

It showcases the 17 United Nations SDGs through creative houses, games, rooms, projects, and much more, all of which drive positive change for people, the planet, prosperity, peace, and partnerships. This is a perfect destination for families, students, and innovative thinkers.

If you want to learn, experience, and immerse yourself in the perfect mixture of education and inspiration in sustainability, then I highly encourage you to visit this museum.

Before you do, though, I would like to inform you that if you are traveling in a large group like my class, the space can feel claustrophobic and humid. It is a bit dark, so please be careful where you walk. Make sure to follow the museum tour guide’s instructions and guidance for a smooth visit. And please, do not touch anything that is not meant to be touched, as our tour guide constantly reminded us that if you break something, you will be required to pay a high price. But overall, make sure to have fun here with your friends, family, and even by yourself!
