Small European cities with beautiful canals and waterways, like Bruges and Venice, have always been popular as romantic destinations. Fewer couples pay attention to Hamburg in northern Germany when choosing their dream trip or honeymoon destination, which is a pity. Known as the port city of Germany and the second-busiest city in Europe, Hamburg also offers various romantic landscapes and ideal activities for couples. Here are my recommendations for the top 5 activities for a romantic getaway.

1. Taking a boat tour in the harbour
Hamburg is famous amongst its visitors mostly for its harbour. Therefore, after walking around to get a main feel of the city, do consider taking a boat tour. Though there are many expensive tour offers out there with great advertising, you should just take boat number 62 from the port (Landungsbrücken) on bridge 3 (brücke 3) to the last stop and back. The whole journey on Elbe River takes about 1 hour and goes through the most beautiful islands. You can buy two single tickets (each for 2.20 EUR or roughly 3 USD) or a 9-hour day ticket for 6.20 EUR or roughly 7 USD from any ticket machine before your departure. The day ticket can be useful later for other public transportation.
2. Leaving a love lock on a bridge
There are plenty of spots around Hamburg to place a love lock with your partner. The most beautiful bridges are located around the Binnenhafen area. While you are at the famous St-Nikolai Memorial, follow the Deichstraße through Binnenhafen River to Miniatur Wunderland - the most famous model train exhibition of Hamburg. You will also see the most famous warehouse district of the city.
3. Rowing around Alster Lake
Hamburg is not only surrounded by the famous port and beautiful rivers but also peaceful lakes to walk around. As soon as the sun sets, lighting from small houses surrounding the lake starts to glow, making the city so alive and colourful in a different way. In the summer, you can row a boat around and relax.
4. Sweet shopping at Chocoversum
One specialty that Germany is famous for is chocolate. You have probably heard of the famous Belgian or Swiss chocolate, but German chocolate is also tasty and is in competition with the best chocolates in Europe. In Hamburg, you can enjoy the chocolate experience in Chocoversum. Here you will find all sorts of chocolate: from dark to bittersweet, from handmade chocolate bars to chocolate beers. The cheapest places to buy chocolate in Germany are local supermarkets. Look for popular brands like Milka, RitterSport or Toblerone.

5. Walking around Planten um Blomen Park
Hamburg is also surrounded with many beautiful parks including Planten un Blomen. Lying in the middle of Hamburg, the park is the green heart of the city with the Japanese garden, the rose garden, many citizens garden and greenhouses. This is an ideal spot for a picnic or short romantic walks. You will enjoy spending time away from the busy shopping streets all over Hamburg centre. Visitors can play plenty of games and sports during the summer here, or ice skate at Indoo Eisarena - the biggest open air ice rink of Hamburg.
Other activities
There are plenty of hidden activities for couples in Hamburg such as visiting the planetarium or the opera. If you get bored of sightseeing, it’s always possible to go shopping on the longest shopping streets of Hamburg such as Spitalerstraße and Mönckebergstraße.
