Torroella de Montgrí is located in the province of Girona, Spain. It is a Catalonia region and the town is only 6 km (3.72 miles) from the sea. The origins of this magnificent palace dates back to the beginning of the ninth century. However, the landmark fortress wasn’t documented until 1385, over one hundred years after Torroella became a royal town. The historic building has played host to important visitors such as King James I ‘the Conqueror’ and Juan I ‘the Hunter King’. While staying at Hotel Palau Lo Mirador discover El Mirador Palace from the 9th – 14th centuries, Santa Caterina Gate from the 14th century, Les Bruixes Tower from the 15th and 16th centuries, and the Gothic architecture of Sant Genís Church.

The old palace rooms

Palau lo Mirador has four types of rooms with a total of 11 in the boutique hotel. The rooms vary in size, color, and the selection of restored furniture to offer maximum comfort and elegance. All the rooms offer heating and air conditioning, bathroom toiletries, hair dryer, a plasma TV, safe, and mini bar.

Enjoy the views of the town from your small private balcony on one of the four standard rooms or the one superior room with a hydro-massage tub in the bathroom.

I stayed in one of the four large Palau Rooms. They contain large windows, making them the brightest in the hotel. All four have a hydro-massage tub for two in the bathroom, which was very enjoyable to relax and be massaged in while drinking a glass of the local wine. The king-size bed was spacious and comfortable, while the creaky old wood floors add to the allure of the palace room. The Palau Rooms also offer impressive views of Torroella and Passeig de l'Església.

The Royal Suite is the largest room in the hotel with 50 m² (538 ft²) of space. An additional private room with an antique desk and sofa make your stay more relaxing and comfortable.

The rooms in the hotel are named after important historic individuals in the area. You may stay in the Bernardo de Santa Eugenia room, James I, Guillermo de Montgrí, or Roberto Robert y Surís room.

Bernardo de Santa Eugenia (unknown – 1269) was a knight, governor of the Kingdom of Majorca, and adviser of King Jaime I of Aragon. He participated in the conquest of Mallorca with a host of 30 knights.

James I (1208 – 1276) the Conqueror was King of Aragon, Count of Barcelona, and Lord of Montpellier from 1213 to 1276; King of Majorca from 1231 to 1276; and King of Valencia from 1238 to 1276. He was an important figure in the development of the Catalan language, sponsoring Catalan literature. His reign was the longest of any Iberian monarch.

Guillermo de Montgrí (1200 – 1273) was a nobleman and clergyman of the Crown of Aragon in the thirteenth century. He was sacristan mayor of the Cathedral of Gerona, administrator of the archdiocese of Tarragona (1233 – 1239), and conqueror of Ibiza and Formentera in the name of King Jaime I of Aragon.

Roberto Robert y Surís (1851 – 1929) was an aristocrat, financier, businessman, and politician from Catalonia, Spain. In 1888 Pope Leo XIII granted him the marquisate of Robert and in 1891 the regent Maria Cristina named him Count of Serra and Sant Iscle. In 1907, Surís also received the title of Count of Torroella de Montgrí with Greatness of Spain and in 1912 received the Great Cross of the Military Merit.

The Palau Lo Mirador Restaurant

The Palau Lo Mirador Restaurant is attached to the 14th century Gothic courtyard. The restaurant is in the old depot house of the palace, an area in past centuries where the carriages were kept. The restaurant offers several selections for lunch and dinner. Special lunch menus available Monday to Friday include choice of a starter, main course, and dessert for 15.50 EUR (16.65 USD) per person. The special dinner menu served every night, includes choice of starter, main course, and dessert. It also includes wine and water for 30 EUR (32.25 USD) per person. For dinner, I had the cream of pumpkin soup with slivers of parmesan cheese and basil oil to start. My entree was beef cooked for 12 hours, roasted leeks, sweet potato mash and a sauce made with sweet local wine from Torroella de Montgri. Dessert was a trilogy of chocolates, walnut brownie, cocoa ice cream, and a cloud of white chocolate.
