Palazzo Pubblico

Art and history enthusiasts staying at this hotel must take less than a 15-minute drive to Palazzo Pubblico to admire some great architecture and artwork. Make sure to stop by the fresco with the allegory of Bad Government by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.

You can see a demonic figure with fangs and horns presiding in the center. At his feet, there's a black goat, the symbol of wickedness. Above his head float the dried-up Avarice, Pride in red with a sword and yoke, and Vanagloria with a mirror.

Seated on the left are Cruelty, showing a snake to a newborn, Betrayal with a lamb with a scorpion's tail, and the Deceptive Fraud of Appearance. On the right, you can see War, Division with a saw in hand, and Furor, a kind of centaur with the head of a boar. Pure Justice lies bound under the throne, and the citizens exercise vengeance and acts of cruelty.

The artist seems to be a good connoisseur, explaining so much with a few words.

Piccolomini Library Piccolomini Library Piccolomini Library

This property is less than a 10-minute drive from an amazing attraction in Siena, Piccolomini Library. The library is located in the Duomo di Siena and features frescoes that look like parchment miniatures of large books. They are light and colorful, with gold accents and intricate details.

The library came into being when a rectangular room on the left side of the cathedral was transformed at the end of the 15th century into a library for a collection of Pope Pius II's books. The walls show 10 scenes from the life of Pope Ene Silvio Piccolomini, commissioned by his nephew, Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini. At the beginning of the 16th century, a painter from Umbria, Pinturicchio, worked on the frescoes together with his assistants, including the young Rafael Santi.

The entire ceiling is covered with so-called grotesque decorations and the floor with blue majolica, with a Piccolomini family crest depicting crescents. In the center of the hall, there is a Roman sculpture, a copy of the original Hellenistic Three Graces.

Take a 10-minute drive from Hotel Athena to visit Santuario Casa di Santa Caterina. In this shrine, you can find some 19th-century frescoes in the bedroom of Saint Catherine. They show the most representative episodes from her life. Even if you're not Christian, you should be impressed by this young girl with a very strong will, living in the tough times.

Catherine was born in Siena in 1337, just at the beginning of the black death that killed many people all around Europe. People were dying in great numbers and were left alone by their relatives. Catherine witnessed all this suffering during her early years. Her parents were cloth dyers and they had 25 children, with Catherine being the youngest. Her twin sister died at a very young age.

Catherine had visions of Christ as a child and decided to become a nun against her parents will. You can see on one fresco how she cuts her hair to avoid being married. At the time, marriage was decided between families, and very young girls were married to older men. The next fresco shows Catherine praying with a dove above her head, which surprises her father. This was the moment when he finally accepted the will of his daughter to dedicate her life to helping the poor and sick.

During her life, Catherine had many mystical visions and she became very well-known, thanks to her writings and letters. Even today if you read them, you'll see there's a lot of wisdom in the words. If you're in Siena, don't forget to visit this shrine to learn about the saint.

The Feast of Herod

If you're a fan of Donatello's work like me (I'm a big fan, more than Michelangelo actually!), visit Battistero di San Giovanni Battista, less than a 10-minute drive from this hotel. At the baptistery, you can find one of his masterpieces, The Feast of Herod. In this work, we are approximately in 1427, the linear perspective was already known thanks to Brunelleschi, Donatello's friend and the sculptor had elaborated it amazingly here. Three-dimensional illusion in a small gilded "window"!

The scene is from the biblical story. On the left, the St. John the Baptist's head is offered to the king #herod on the platter. Look at these expressions, the psychological study of every face. The king is terrified, the guests on the right are sad, surprised, horrified. All kind of emotions can be seen here. Observe every detail of this so accurate scene. Decorations, table, the foot under the table, the clothes...

Donatello was a genius and Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci had to study him carefully because everything they developed lately is already HERE in this masterpiece.

View of Siena from Facciatone View of Siena from Facciatone

Want to enjoy views of Siena from a beautiful angle? Visit Facciatone, only about a 15-minute drive from this property.

Siena is often named "the daughter of the road" as the city owes its wealth to its location on a major trade and pilgrimage path, Via Francigena. The city was formed around the major street going from Porta Camollia to Porta Romana. From this vantage point, this route is clearly visible. Porta Romana is also visible in the photo, as it opens up to a beautiful landscape towards Rome.
