Abduction of a Sabine Woman by Giambologna Rat Of Polissena Rat Of Polissena

Are you an art lover? Then, take a short five-minute drive to Loggia dei Lanzi to see some amazing sculptures. One of the most notable is the Abduction of a Sabine Woman by Giambologna. It's a gigantic marble sculpture depicting three intertwined figures, two men and a woman.

Giambologna, an artist from France, settled permanently in Florence and set up his workshop here. He received many commissions from Kosma I and his sons, the rulers of the city at the time, and was one of the most important artists of the 16th century. There are many wonderful sculptures by him in Florence.

The Abduction of a Sabine Woman is considered his masterpiece. Apparently, the artist did not plan his subject; he was only interested in creating three figures in the form of a spiral, a sculpture that would surpass even the art of Michelangelo. Only after the work was completed did Giambologna give the sculpture a title, suggested by others. The legendary story is about the Romans who used to kidnap women from the Sabine tribe.

Another notable statue to check out in this building is the Rat Of Polissena. When I look at it, my imagination traces the story of Achilles and the Trojan War, described so vividly in"The Achilles Song" by Madeline Miller.

Pirro, son of Achilles is represented in the act of kidnapping Polissena, the daughter of Primo, king of Troy. He just killed his brother Polidoro and he's about to hit his mother Ecuba. Polissena will be sacrificed to facilitate a good return trip for the Greeks after the long war.

Sculptor Pio Fedi prepared many drawings for this incredible marble work and was inspired by the nearby statues of Menelao and Patroclo, the Sabine Rat, as well as the works of Antonio Canova and Lorenzo Bartolini. The people of Florence liked the sculpture so much that they decided to place it in Loggia dei Lanzi together with the five-century masterpieces of Benvenuto Cellini and Giambologna.

Leonardo da Vinci at Uffizi Gallery
This hotel is within a five-minute walking distance of Uffizi Gallery. If you visit the art museum, make sure to check out the sculpture of Leonardo da Vinci by Luigi Pampaloni, 1839, in one of its niches. Leonardo seems deep in his thoughts, meditating about something. In his left hand, he holds a drawing, the study for Jesus's head for the Last Supper. He was looking to create "the perfect head" of Christ for his fresco, observing different people and their expressions, and he eventually found it.
