Sitting on the bank of the Potomac River, on the border between Virginia and Maryland, Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States. Named after the first president of the country, George Washington, the city is divided into four quadrants that center around the Capitol Building. It is the heart of U.S. politics with all three branches of the government present, along with The White House being the home of the president. Built in 1792, The White House is the home of every elected president since John Adams. It is located in the downtown region, and the surrounding area and National Mall are some of the city’s most Instagrammable places. Parks, museums, the theater district, and more are all close by. If you’re looking to stay near the iconic White House, check out these top hotels with view of The White House in Washington, D.C.

Popular picks in Washington, D.C.:

  • Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History: This is a top choice for any history buff, science nerd, or culture enthusiast. Opened in 1910, the museum boasts a huge area equal to 18 football fields! Naturally, the exhibits are also numerous, starting from natural science specimens to cultural artifacts. There’s even an insect zoo that you can visit if you’re not scared of creepy crawlies.

  • Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens: Are you a nature lover visiting Washington, D.C.? Then, you must visit this breathtaking garden by the Anacostia River. Take in the lush surroundings full of water plants, lotuses, and other flowers, and take some pictures in the beautiful environment. Note that the flowers bloom between May and early fall.

About The White House

The White House is the official residence of the President of the United States and the First Family in Washington, D.C. It’s also the President’s executive office, where they make important decisions about the country. Standing on an 18-acre (7.28-hectare) estate, it’s one of the most famous and important buildings in the country.

The building dates back to the late 18th century when its design was conceived by an Irish-American architect, James Hoban, following a public design competition for the presidential residence. Consequently, the Georgian mansion was built in the striking Palladian architectural style.

Tips for visiting:

  • The White House hosts self-guided tours of about 45 minutes. Visitors are required to arrive 15 minutes in advance. While inside, mobile phones are to be kept in silent mode, and no flash photography and videography is allowed.

  • According to the official website of The White House, the acceptable forms of identification for US citizens are a driver’s license, passport, or military ID. Foreign visitors must carry a valid passport, an Alien Registration Card, a Permanent Resident Card, or a U.S. State Department Issued Diplomatic ID Card.
