The seat of the American government, Washington D.C., is home to many of the country’s most iconic and most historic attractions like the Washington Monument. Constructed in the mid-19th century as a tribute to George Washington, the country’s first President, this 169.1-m (555-ft) obelisk (according to the National Park Service) is located within National Mall. Another historic monument that you will find here is the Lincoln Memorial that features 36 columns surrounding a 5.8-m (19-ft) statue of former President Abraham Lincoln. The city also houses Library of Congress, the world’s biggest library that you can explore on your own or by going on complimentary tours.
Whether you are in the city for business or leisure, availing of quality accommodations is one of the best ways to maximize your trip. Check out these hotels with a view of the Washington Monument.
Popular picks in Washington D.C.
Try visiting the Tidal Basin, a 107-acre (43.30-hectare) pond that is encircled by a 2.1-mile (3.38-kilometer) loop trail. If you visit during spring you will get to witness the blooming of the magnificent cherry trees (gifted from Tokyo). Keep a watch on the blooming period on “bloomwatch” hosted by the National Park Service on their website.
Having 21 museums and a National Zoo, the Smithsonian Institution can proudly claim its place as the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex. If you’re itching to know more about scientific breakthroughs and historic discoveries or just wish to feast to eyes on the many marvels of mankind, the Smithsonian Institution won’t disappoint.
I would recommend a visit to Rock Creek Park. The 1,754-acre (709.82-hectare) city park extends from the Washington, D.C.-Maryland border to the Potomac River. It has 32 miles (51.50 kilometers) of hiking trails, 13 miles (20.92 kilometers) of horseback trails, golf courses and tennis courts. The National Park Service takes care of the park and has updates regarding detours and maintenance schedules.

About the Washington Monument
Reading into the history of the monument’s construction brings out several details that highlight the tribulations that were overcome during its construction. In spite of these setbacks, the relentless desire to honor the essential founding father has come through; a testament to the American way. According to the National Park Service, the design is meant to resemble an Egyptian obelisk, a fitting gesture meant to honor the former president. Over the years, the monument’s upkeep has brought in modern additions, as is with the case of the electric elevator that replaced the original steam-driven one which took 10 to 12 minutes to reach the top!
Tips for visiting:
- Visiting the Washington Monument can be more enjoyable if you go during quieter times, like weekdays or early mornings, to avoid crowds. Remember to bring your camera or smartphone to capture memories, but leave tripods and bulky photography gear at home since they're not allowed inside.
- Be sure to visit the nearby attractions such as the National Mall, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Smithsonian Museum (before the sun goes down, get the reference?) to make the most of your visit.
- Accessibility is a priority that is taken care of. The memorial provides wheelchair ramps and elevators for visitors who might have mobility issues. If you have a service animal, well, fret not, they can come along as well.

“Our room (# 1200) was charming & magnificent. When we checked in, Ali mentioned to us that we had the best view in the entire hotel, but I had to see it with my own eyes to believe it. Not only did we have a clear view of the national mall, but we overlooked the White House as well. And to set the experience over the top, we were able to watch NYE fireworks being set off in Alexandria, VA. Just phenomenal. “This hotel is minutes from all the action. We stayed in a room with a Monument View, which is well worth the upgrade for incredible views of the Washington Monument - we even got to see Marine One land at the White House from our room! The room itself is small and dated although it felt clean overall.
