Located in the heart of Lincolnshire, Lincoln City combines historical treasures, amazing architecture and picturesque scenery. Situated on the east coast of England and only 240 km from London, approx. 150 mi, Lincoln is not to be missed when visiting the UK. 24 hours in Lincoln will see you soaking up bundles of history, browsing markets and getting a little bit spendy in the array of boutique shops.

Visit an architectural gem

Once the tallest building in the world, Lincoln Cathedral is abundant with beauty, intricate detail and Gothic style. Dating back to 1072, Lincoln Cathedral is perfect for those wanting to enjoy history at its finest. An absolutely stunning building, Lincoln Cathedral is not only incredible to view but offers an array of tours inside. For the fitter ones amongst us, why not enjoy marching up 338 steps on the ‘tower tour’. Or, for a tamer approach, enjoy the intricate details with a tour of the inside of the cathedral.

Entrance fees will cost 8 GBP, approx. 11 USD; however, if you visit before 9 am or after 4:30 pm, entry is free. Whichever time you choose, Lincoln Cathedral is absolutely beautiful and definitely shouldn’t be ignored.

Travel back to medieval times

Sat just opposite the cathedral is the Lincoln Castle. Overseeing the Lincolnshire skyline, the Lincoln Castle is a view of medieval history and outstanding architectural design. Housing a Victorian prison, the castle is the perfect way to indulge in some gruesome history. Once inside the grounds, volunteers are often dressed in traditional clothing, which really adds to the experience.

Inside is an array of historical treasures including my personal favourites, the dungeons and amazing towers. Free guided tours are available if you want to learn the in-depth tales of the castle and the public hangings that used to take place – perhaps not for the faint hearted. However, if you don’t fancy a group tour guide, an audio guide is also available.

Entrance is free so you really have no excuse not to visit!

Get spendy on Steep Hill

Whether you prefer independent boutiques or major brands, Lincoln has it all creating the ultimate shopping experience. The bottom of Steep Hill will have you indulging in major retail therapy with the vast amount of high street names. This beautiful cobbled hill connects the bottom of the high street right to the top next to the cathedral. Full of beautiful vintage and retro shops and quirky independent stores, this hill is definitely worth the climb.

Markets galore

The highlight of anyone’s day in Lincoln has to be the markets. Browse local arts and crafts or over indulge in a farmer’s local produce. Either way, Lincoln markets are truly irresistible. I would personally recommend visiting during the first week of December where you can experience the famous Lincoln Christmas Market. With over 250 stalls and live entertainment, you will feel as though you have dived head first into a winter wonderland. Oh, and don’t forget to try the local fudge!

In and around Lincoln

If exploring Lincoln in 24 hours is just not enough, why not explore down at the docks where you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to food. For those who what to venture out into the country, I suggest visiting Hartsholme Country Park. Located 4.8 km, approx. 3 mi from Lincoln City. Hartsholme Country Park has over 200 acres of magnificent open space, perfect for an afternoon stroll.

Lincoln is absolutely bursting at the seams with English heritage and should be high on your list of places to visit in the UK.
