Medellin is a small city in Colombia that is just starting to make it onto many traveler’s radars. While it does not boast the size or fame that Bogota is known for, Medellin is a wonderful city with a lot to offer. Because the city is so small (or at least the part of the city that is safe and attractive to travelers is so small) it can easily be done in a day or two. Read on to learn how to enjoy a day of exploring in Medellin.

Soak in some sun while enjoying Medellin's beautiful parks

Medellin may be a small city, but that doesn’t stop it from being full of beautiful nature. Each park in Medellin is unique and worth a visit, but if you only have a day or two in the area, I recommend La Presidenta Lineal Park. This park is conveniently located in the center of the Pablado (which is where most travelers stay when visiting Medellin) and features a beautiful, winding path and plenty of grass space that is ideal for a picnic. When the sun is out in Medellin, it shines bright, and you can enjoy it from the comfort of this cozy park.

Check out the local street market (and street food, of course!)

After enjoying a slow morning in the La Presidenta Lineal Park (or any of Medellin’s beautiful parks), head to Parque Lleras. It’s a short walk from La Presidenta Lineal Park and acts as the center of the Pablado. The park itself isn’t much to see, but most days (when the sun is out) the park will be surrounded by street vendors of every kind. From homemade fudgesicles (pick your own toppings) to clothing stores built in a van, you’re bound to find a thing or two of interest at this modern, hip, and fashionable street market.

Wait out the rain storms in this cozy cafe

The streets of the Pablado in Medellin are fun to stroll along. You could spend hours weaving in and out of the cute boutiques and restaurants that line the avenues. But Medellin can be prone to sudden thunder storms, and it’s nice to know where to escape to when the rain hits. Even if it stays dry during your visit, Pergamino Café is worth a visit. This is one of the nicest cafes in Medellin and once inside you will swear you stepped into a hip café in Brooklyn, NYC. The coffee is just as good and the prices are better, so whether you stop by for a quick drink in the afternoon or spend half a day sipping your drink and people watching, make sure to include Pergamino Café on your Medellin itinerary.

In conclusion: Medellin is the perfect stopover for your Colombian adventure

Medellin is an easy city to overlook. It is small, kind of out of the way, and not well known. That being said, it is not to be missed. This precious city is a one-of-a-kind slice of paradise in the middle of the gorgeous country that is Colombia. Medellin is the perfect example of classic Colombian culture coming together with the modern, hip scene that is taking the city by storm. Whatever else you intend to do while in Colombia, make sure to include a trip to Medellin.
